Taylor Sheridan, the 56-year-old creator of Yellowstone, has revealed he was set to retire until purchasing a $330 million Texas ranch forced him back to work.

The writer and director had intended to step away from television after completing the fourth season of his hit series, but he signed an exclusive overall deal with Paramount after needing cash to complete the massive property purchase.

Sheridan made the disclosure during an appearance on the Rodeo Time podcast, explaining that he believed he had accomplished everything he could in Hollywood before the property came up for sale.

Before deciding to purchase the new property, Sheridan already owned a 600-acre ranch in Weatherford, Texas, near Fort Worth, which he had paid for in cash and planned to make his permanent home.

"I was set up to retire. I was going to be done after Yellowstone. I'd bought the ranch in Weatherford, and I paid cash. I didn't owe anybody anything," Sheridan said.

"And I was going to put my feet up and show horses and have my little hobby herd over here and that was it," he added.

The Four Sixes Ranch Purchase

His retirement plans changed in 2021 when the historic 6666 Ranch, also known as the Four Sixes Ranch, became available for purchase. The sprawling 266,000-acre property in Texas served as a prominent backdrop for several episodes in the fourth season of Yellowstone.

Spanning an area nearly twice the size of Chicago, the iconic cattle ranch had remained under the ownership of the same family for more than 150 years before Sheridan pursued the acquisition.

Sheridan acknowledged that buying the property meant his Hollywood career could not come to an end as planned. "I knew that if I bought this ranch that I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while," he admitted.

The writer and director, 56, explained how he initially had intentions to 'put his feet up' after Yellowstone season four but decided to purchase the iconic Four Sixes Ranch, which spans over 266,000 acres, and was the backdrop of several episodes of the series

When the family offered the ranch to Sheridan for $330 million, he lacked the upfront capital required for the transaction. He recalled telling them: "Well, boys, I'm a little short. I don't have, in fact, I'm about 300 million short."

Negotiating the Paramount Deal

That shortfall served as the catalyst for Sheridan to return to executives at Paramount Network's parent company, who had spent years trying to secure an exclusive production agreement with him.

Sheridan explained that the company had been eager to lock him into an overall contract. "They were terrified that I was going to go to greener pastures and leave them and go somewhere else, which I probably was," Sheridan said. "So, they'd been for years trying to get me to sign an exclusive deal with Paramount, and I'd said no."

He said he was '$300 million short' to buy the ranch with a $330 million price tag

"But once this happened, I called them and I said, 'You know what? I think I'm ready to make an overall deal.' They said, 'That's great. Do you have a number in mind?' And I said, 'Why, yes, I do. I sure do.'"

Following those negotiations, Sheridan led a group of investors to finance the purchase, officially closing the acquisition of the Four Sixes Ranch in January 2022.

Television Expansion and Background

Since signing the exclusivity agreement, Sheridan has produced a high volume of content for Paramount. His original creations include Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Special Ops: Lioness, Landman, and The Madison.

He has also expanded the Yellowstone universe by creating spin-off prequel series 1883 and 1923, making his multi-series franchise one of the most prominent properties on Paramount.

Sheridan, a former actor who transitioned into writing and directing, rose to prominence after writing critically acclaimed feature films before building his television empire.

Early Struggles in Hollywood

The now wealthy writer and director revealed earlier this week that his current success follows years of hardship early in his career, when he experienced homelessness while trying to make it in Hollywood.

"I was homeless twice," Sheridan told Town & Country magazine. "I lived in my car. Sometimes I'd go to Ojai, just somewhere where I could safely sleep. I did that for six months."

Reflecting on those early struggles in Southern California, Sheridan added: "I could have decided at any point, 'I'm going to go get a full-time job and I'm going to give up this dream,' and I chose to sleep in my car over that."
