Peruvian cumbia singer Thamara Gómez has become the target of an extortion attempt after an explosive device detonated outside her home in Sullana, in northern Peru. According to her band, Las Estrellas de la Cumbia, the attackers left messages demanding a payment of 50,000 soles.
The group, which Gómez joined after leaving the well known cumbia orchestra Corazón Serrano, quickly voiced its support for her on social media and condemned the attack.
Band condemns extortion
In a statement posted on Facebook, Las Estrellas de la Cumbia said they wanted to express their full support and solidarity with their singer, who had been the victim of an extortion attempt. They said they strongly condemned any form of threat or violence, and added that no one should have to live in fear for doing their job with dedication and passion.
Call on Fujimori to act
The statement was published on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Alongside condemning the attack on Gómez's home, the band appealed directly to President Keiko Fujimori to intervene and safeguard the safety of its members and the public.
The band said they trusted the authorities, and also the newly elected President of the Republic, Keiko Sofía Fujimori, to carry out the necessary investigations through the relevant institutions in order to identify and punish those responsible.
"Music should be joy, not fear"
Las Estrellas de la Cumbia said they would remain united as a team and continue giving their unconditional support to Gómez and her family. They thanked their audience for their affection and understanding, and said they would keep working with the same commitment, always prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the group.
They added that music should be a space of joy, not fear, and that they were stronger when united.
Gómez, who is from the Piura region, previously performed as vocalist for Corazón Serrano before joining Las Estrellas de la Cumbia.
