The End of Oak Street Movie Opens in Russian Cinemas

The sci-fi survival thriller film The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, has begun showing in Russian cinemas via parallel distribution.

The 99-minute picture, directed by David Robert Mitchell and produced by J.J. Abrams, launched in Russian theaters on August 29, 2026, following its international release earlier in the month. Only a single cinema in Moscow chose to screen the movie, according to a review published on September 10, 2026, by Russian news outlet Gazeta.Ru.

The project carried a production budget between 80 million dollars and 92 million dollars and has grossed 115 million dollars across its first four weekends worldwide. The film held its world premiere in Burbank, California, on August 9, 2026, before opening across theaters in the United States on August 14, 2026. A digital and home media release is scheduled for September 15, 2026.

Parallel distribution in Russia allows theatrical exhibitors to show major foreign films without obtaining direct distribution licenses from Western studios. The practice became widespread among Russian cinema chains to maintain box office revenue despite international commercial withdrawals.

Box Office Performance and Production History

Despite its major studio backing, Gazeta.Ru film critic Pavel Voronkov reported that the movie appears heading toward financial losses unless home media sales or word of mouth alter its box office trajectory. The film has drawn minimal audience engagement in Russia, where Moscow exhibitors largely bypassed the release.

Mitchell directed the feature following a prolonged period without a major release. He previously achieved critical acclaim with his 2014 low-budget horror film It Follows, which cost 8 million dollars to produce, before directing the 2018 mystery film Under the Silver Lake, which failed commercially despite its modest budget.

Abrams produced the new feature through his production outfit. Abrams built his directorial career on projects heavily influenced by Steven Spielberg, including Super 8 in 2011 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.

Suburban Family Life and Time Displacement

The narrative of The End of Oak Street takes place during the summer of 1982 in the fictional town of Flowervale. The story centers on the Platt family as parents Denis, played by Hathaway, and Greg, played by McGregor, navigate severe marital strain.

Denis feels trapped by domestic routine and secretly writes a manuscript in which she imagines abandoning her family. Greg hides the fact that he was recently fired from his job and secretly works delivering pizza. He routinely removes the commercial advertising sign from the roof of his vehicle before arriving home because Denis feels ashamed of his employment.

The couple's children, Audrey, played by Maisie Stella, and Brian, played by Christian Convery, witness their parents' constant arguments and worry about an impending divorce. The family household also includes Starbuck, an energetic dog who routinely harasses neighbor Mel Jacobs, played by P.J. Byrne, to the amusement of his owners. The cast also features Jordan Alexa Davis and Emily Kuroda.

The domestic tension abruptly changes when the entire central district of Flowervale is suddenly transported back hundreds of millions of years into prehistoric history. The time jump forces the family to set aside their marital disputes to survive an immediate prehistoric threat.

Prehistoric Fauna and Visual Techniques

The film introduces several species of prehistoric creatures, including feathered Coelophysis, giant Titanoboa serpents, and predatory Allosaurs. Voronkov noted that while the creature depictions lack paleontological accuracy, the action sequences function effectively as cinematic spectacle.

Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis shot the project using split-field diopter lenses. The optical technique creates two distinct focal points within a single camera frame, visually placing characters into separate focal planes during family arguments.

Gioulakis is Mitchell's regular cinematographer and has worked extensively with director M. Night Shyamalan on thrillers such as Split and Glass. Hathaway won an Academy Award for her performance in Les Misérables and starred in The Devil Wears Prada, while McGregor gained fame in Trainspotting and played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise.

Tonal Shifts and Script Revisions

The first hour of the film functions as a tribute to 1980s adventure cinema produced by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, focusing on family conflict over everyday matters and religious belief. Past the midpoint, the tone shifts into harsh graphic horror, presenting far more violent stakes than classic creature feature films.

Mitchell and Abrams originally developed a darker twist ending reminiscent of Rod Serling's classic anthology series The Twilight Zone. They eventually chose an upbeat resolution following the death of Mitchell's father, Robert Allen Mitchell, to whose memory the feature is dedicated.

Voronkov wrote that despite its warm resolution, the underlying story carries a cynical message regarding nostalgia. He stated that the narrative insists on abandoning the past even when doing so demands literal sacrifices, depicting a cold reality where individual survival takes precedence over family unit cohesion.

Comparison to Recent Spielberg Box Office

The review contrasted Mitchell's cynical approach with recent releases by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg's latest feature, Day of Exposure, earned 241 million dollars worldwide this year, generating slightly more than double its production budget.

Spielberg's previous two theatrical releases, the 2021 musical West Side Story and the 2022 autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, combined for less than half of Day of Exposure's total box office gross. Voronkov observed that while Spielberg continues to champion traditional ideals of truth and public journalism, Mitchell's film presents a darker view of modern society where individuals are left entirely to their own devices.
