Proper maintenance after every load is essential to extend the operational lifespan of laundry equipment, but conflicting advice surrounds how best to ventilate the drum.
One maintenance specialist detailed the drawbacks of a technique he long regarded as best practice. After washing, he intentionally left the washing machine door open to allow steam to escape quickly, preventing moisture accumulation and mold growth inside the appliance. While the drum dried rapidly and avoided fungal issues, long term usage introduced unexpected mechanical problems.
The specialist observed that the weight of the heavy glass door gradually exerted negative strain on the hinges and the rubber door seal. Over time, the rubber gasket became rigid and deformed, which ultimately impaired the overall operation of the washing machine. To dry the drum without causing structural wear, he concluded that leaving the door open for approximately 30 minutes is sufficient. Wiping down the drum manually can accelerate evaporation, after which the door should be closed.
Preventing mold and bacteria growth
Other appliance experts offer opposing advice, recommending that washing machine doors remain open in between wash cycles. Dark, humid, and damp conditions inside a sealed drum create favorable environments for bacteria to multiply rapidly.
