When a teenager goes missing, youngsters Gordie Lachance (Will Wheaton), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern Tessio (Jerry O’Connell) discover he is believed to be dead after being hit by a train. Already picturing themselves famous and making headlines, the four friends embark on a journey through the forest of Castle Rock to find the body. A risky journey in which their friendship grows stronger and their innocence fades little by little.

Stephen King shocked by his first viewing of the film

Kiefer Sutherland, John Cusack and Richard Dreyfuss complete the cast of this drama which according to Rob Reiner Stephen King considers one of the most beautiful transpositions of his work on the screen. Asked by Grandstand Chicago in 1986, assures the director the author was overwhelmed by the discovery of the film :

We had a screening for Stephen King and he was shocked by the end. He’s been gone for fifteen minutes.

Upon his return, the writer discusses the autobiographical part of the story with the director. Warning, the following lines contain spoilers! At the end of Stand by Methe viewer finds the famous author who became Gordie, who reveals that his best friend Chris died trying to break up a fight, after becoming a lawyer. A conclusion directly inspired by the life of Stephen Kingas he explained to Rob Reiner:

It’s the best movie ever made from anything I’ve written. You really knew how to capture my story. It’s autobiographical. The only things that have been invented concern the search for the corpse. I’m a writer and my best friend is really the person who gave me the confidence to become one. And he was killed in his youth.
