A 16-year prison sentence for Harvey Weinstein

This Thursday, February 23, 2023, Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a European model. At the end of the trial which takes place in Los Angeles, the producer of pulp Fiction AND New York gangs was sentenced to sixteen years’ imprisonment. He faced up to 18 years in prison for these acts committed in a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.

During this trial, four women testified, explaining that the co-founder of Miramax forced them to have sex between 2004 and 2013. As in several previous investigations and testimony, the fallen tycoon has been described as “a predator”. Once all-powerful in the Hollywood industry, he would pressure his victims for fear of them speaking.

If the jurors found Harvey Weinstein guilty of the acts committed against the European model, they found him not guilty of the charges of a second complainant, and did not reach a verdict on those of the other two women. The former producer has appealed his sentence. Before the verdict, said Harvey Weinstein, quoted by variety :

I claim to be innocent. It’s about money… Please don’t give me a life sentence. I don’t deserve it… There are so many things wrong with this case. There is no evidence… It’s a fabrication… I beg for mercy.

End of life behind bars

Seventy-year-old Harvey Weinstein could spend the end of his life in prison. This sentence is added to that of 23 years who is serving his 2020 New York City sentence for another rape and sexual assault case. Rumors about his actions have been circulating in Hollywood for many years. They were not, however, revealed only in 2017thanks in large part to investigations by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey for the New York Timesand that of Ronan Farrow for the New Yorker.
