Harry Potter: Pop Culture’s Most Profitable Wizard
You probably know the story, but we’ll give you a quick summary. Harry Potter it is a series of novels created by JK Rowlingwhose first volume, Harry Potter to the philosopher’s stone, was published in 1997. This literary saga quickly gained immense popularity. JK Rowling releases six sequels, then continues to expand the magical universe with the saga Fantastic animals and with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The first seven works are adapted into films between 2001 and 2011. The filmmakers Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and David Yates follow one another to tell the adventures of the young wizard, played by Daniel Radcliffe. In short, the saga Harry Potter almost pays $8 billion in box office receipts worldwide. Which makes it one of the most profitable of all time.

A series soon?
After the success of this cult saga, Warner has continued to develop the universe with Fantastic animals. Three films are released between 2016 and 2022. Unfortunately, success is not the same. Although the three films have generated more than $1.8 billion in worldwide box office receipts, the latest installment, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secretsit’s a critical and financial failure. David Yates’ film only pays off 407 million dollars in worldwide turnover, which it represents worst box office score of the entire JK Rowling license.
Despite this failure, a rumor has been circulating regularly for some time now. A rumor suggesting that HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television will produce a series Harry Potter. Now, things seem confirmed since the platform would be in the process of concluding an agreement with JK Rowling to exploit her literary saga. Indeed, the author always has creative control over the exploitation of her creation.

One season per novel
HBO Max is currently looking for a writer to develop this new project around the magical universe of JK Rowling. The idea of this show would be to offer one season per novel, second Expiration. While the deal isn’t official yet, it’s a project that has been close to Warner Bros. for a while. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav, has repeatedly underlined its interest in franchising, specifying that the exploitation of intellectual property is a priority. As for casting, we still don’t know who could succeed Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
