In the four seasons of Barry, the HBO series created by Alec Berg and Bill Hader, Henry Winkler played Gene Cousineau

One of the best television series of recent years, barry will end in the fourth season, which began airing last Sunday, the 16th, with two episodes available on HBO It is HBO Max. One of the highlights of the production created by Alec Berg It is Bill Hader is the veteran actor Henry Winklerinterpreter of Gene Cousineau.

The plot accompanies barry (Hader), ruthless hitman who decides to change his life (and redemption, perhaps) after visiting the acting school run by Gene Cousineau. Then, the protagonist starts dreaming of becoming a movie star. hollywood.

During an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil, Winkler gave some details about the fourth and final season of the series, in addition to reflecting on his career. The new phase of production represents a major change for Gene: gained national prominence. “I think he loves barrywho finally found someone who thinks he really needs him, but the man killed the woman he loved and no one is above the law,” he said. “This is very 2023, especially in America.”

And he is famous for it. I don’t think he planned this. He dreamed about it all his life and he misses it. And then, suddenly, he’s famous! I think everything that happens to him is a surprise.

In addition, the actor reflected on his character’s arc over these four seasons, and was quite philosophical: “If I’m at rock bottom, at the beginning I’m one of those animals that can skid on water. I get wings. During the second and Season 3, I fly out of the well and now I’m sitting on the rock around the well. In Season 4, my wing broke and I started falling into the water.”

This time I don’t know whether or not I’m going to stay on the surface. Now, let’s stop for a moment here because, come on, that’s a great metaphor.

Before barry, Henry Winkler featured prominently in productions such as Happy Days, Panic (1996), Parks and Recreation It is Arrested Developmentbut he found himself at his peak only in the series produced by HBO.

“I love being part of this ensemble. fonzie in Happy Days when he was 27 years old. I won barry when I was 72,” he said. “I thought at 27, ‘Will I ever do something this impactful?’ Now, aged 77, barry it’s over and I think, ‘Will I ever do something this impactful?'” Read the full interview below:

What is Gene’s state of mind at the start of the fourth and final season?
I think he loves barry, who finally found someone he thinks he really needs him, but the man killed the woman he loved and no one is above the law. That’s very 2023, especially in the United States. And he is famous for it. I don’t think he planned this. He dreamed about it all his life and he misses it. And then, suddenly, he’s famous! I think everything that happens to him is a surprise.

And that has a huge effect on your teaching business, on the one hand…
Gene
started out as an acting coach who thought he didn’t care much as long as everyone paid cash on the spot. So he becomes an international television star. I don’t think the international television part made him a better teacher. I think all he did was feed his ego. And fill your classroom.

Why do you think, when Sally comes back, he gets her to take over some classes?
I’m still struggling with that, but she was so good. Remember my first scene of the whole show when she started, and he literally saw potential there…he thought it would be a good starting point for her to rebuild her life. And so when he got the chance, she imitated Gene. Even her cadence was the same. It doesn’t work for her because the characters on this particular show are so flawed, so messed up, it’s hard. You have to be well centered to go where your dream wants to go. It’s as if our breast, our veins, our muscles were a web inside us and it was difficult to break.

Every other character on the show is obsessed with Barry in some way, but Gene seems not to.
O Gene he is obsessed with himself. He saw something in barrywhich went wrong, so he goes back to his first obsessions… Gene.

How would you describe his arc over the four seasons?
If I’m at rock bottom, in the beginning I’m one of those animals that can skid in the water. I get wings. During the second and third seasons, I fly out of the pit and now I’m sitting on the rock around the pit. In season four, my wing broke and I started falling into the water. This time I don’t know whether or not I’m going to stay on the surface. Now, let’s stop for a moment here because, come on, that’s a great metaphor.

Did you know that Barry would be a hit?
I did not know. When you’re working on it, you’re trying your hardest to make sure you’re doing the best job you know how and you’re making an impact. I had Alec Berg It is Bill Hader, two best at making entertainment. You listen to them, you do things you’re not sure about, but you do and then it turns out, yes, they took me to the Promised land.

Season three was a remarkable season for you because you had this phenomenal set of two-handed scenes, which is a gift and a challenge for any actor, I imagine.
Well, I’ll let you in on the secret… you get help. You’re climbing a mountain, but you’ve got the great ropes, you’ve got the big picks, you’ve got the big pillars or whatever. Look who I had in those scenes, right? Robert Wisdom, when he was face to face with me, yelling at me. that fierce Robert Wisdom… it felt like my hair was flying. I love being part of this set. I won fonzie in Happy Days when he was 27 years old. I won barry when I was 72. I thought at 27, ‘Will I ever do something this impactful?’ Now, aged 77, barry When it’s over, I think, ‘Will I ever do something this impactful?’

How did you feel when season four came to an end?
Well, we were all doing a good job, all focusing on being good at what we do. Remember, we are isolated from each other. Sarah and I met a few times. Stephen Root, I’ve never seen. We were happy when we crossed paths in the makeup trailer, but it was really sad that this happened. I speak with bill all the time. We had breakfast. Sarah is in London and we text all the time. She was amazing this season. I, Stephen Root, Robert Wisdom, Mrs. root and my wife went to Los Angeles for hamburgers. We’re going to do it again. Yes, we had fun.

Gene shows a lot of vulnerability. You had to go through some pretty tough places as an actor playing him.
That’s your job. That’s what I was trained for. Then the element you need is the leader and his
guide. I had Alec Berg It is Bill Hader. Bill Hader decided that he would direct all eight. He produced it, he wrote it, he starred in it and you never saw a ripple in the water. Whatever the pressure on bill, he never put on the actor. He was amazing.

Do you think it changed the way people see you?
Yes, absolutely. For a long time I was known as fonzieafter Panic, Parks and Recreation It is Arrested Development. Now you go to one comic con and people know me as Gene. And I’ll tell you one thing: watch Saturday Night Live since the beginning of the program. Colin Jost and his wife came up to me at a concert and said, “You’re killing it, man.” Keith Urban and the wife [Nicole Kidman] said they love barry. This is amazing. All these incredibly talented human beings! I’m a lucky guy.
