And even cheese! 3 “usual” products that a gastroenterologist does not eat – and does not advise anyone

The state of the digestive organs depends on many factors – but mainly on what we eat. This list of foods is not recommended by Western gastroenterologists. It does not contain the most obvious “enemies” of digestion – such as crisps and alcohol. But there are products that many mistakenly consider neutral, and sometimes even useful.

The health of the whole organism depends on the state of the digestive organs – as well as on our well-being and ability to enjoy food. If there are problems with the gastrointestinal tract, pain and discomfort can appear even from healthy foods. That’s why it’s so important to pay close attention to your diet.

Of course, from time to time you can treat yourself to something harmful and therefore particularly tasty. The main thing is not to make it a frequent habit. You should also avoid the more insidious food categories that seem harmless to the digestive system, but actually destroy the digestive tract.

Dr. Sarmed Sami, consultant gastroenterologist from London, invites you to pay particular attention to these 3 categories of food. It is better not to eat them at all – and to look for healthier analogues with a “clean” composition.

processed meat

Sausage, bacon, ham and cold cuts are an integral part of breakfast for millions of people around the world. This category of food is dangerous because of its high salt content: it is proven that increased salt consumption destroys certain strains of lactobacilli in the intestines.

However, the main danger of processed meat products is nitrates and nitrites in their composition. Once in the intestines, these substances are transformed into nitrosamines, a compound that causes the development of colorectal cancer.

“In addition, sausages are high in fat, which can cause harmful bacteria to grow and cause inflammation in the intestines,” adds Dr. Sami.

High-fat dairy products

“Milk” is high in protein and calcium, but not for everyone. First of all, this is due to lactose intolerance – according to estimates of a gastroenterologist, this condition occurs to one degree or another in almost 90% of adults.

Of course, a little milk or cream in your morning coffee probably won’t hurt. But if you often experience stomach pains and suffer from bloating and gas, better try eliminating dairy from your diet and see what changes.

According to the expert, dairy products with a high fat content, such as cream, butter and hard cheeses, most negatively affect digestion.

“A high content of saturated fat can increase the production of bile acids in the intestine, which affects the microbiome of the entire gastrointestinal tract and reduces its own number of bifidobacteria”, explains the doctor.

ready meals

Yes, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. But finding ready meals that don’t contain a lot of salt, sugar, butter and preservatives is a nearly impossible task. Considering that many people buy food “in trays” every day for lunch, and often also go to the salad section in the evening so as not to waste energy at dinner, it is frightening to imagine how many ingredients harmful to the digestive tract we consume every day. We don’t even suspect it!

“These highly processed foods alter metabolic processes in the body. A diet rich in these foods is linked to type 2 diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome and cardiovascular disease,” concludes Sarmed Sami.
