Johnny Depp back in Joan of Barry
Maiwenn’s new film, Joan of Barry has just opened the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The feature film marks the return to cinema of Johnny Depp. In the movie, the actor lends his features to Louis XVwho fell in love with the heroine played by the director and made her his official favourite.

The presence of the actor on the Croisette next to Maïwenn, Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe or even Melvil Poupaud aroused indignation. This was ensured in particular by the Osez le féminisme association “French cinema always defends the aggressors” and “continue to despise the victims of violence,” the star returned to the stage just months after his highly publicized trial pitting him against ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused him of domestic violence. At the end of this trial, the plaintiffs were both found guilty of libel.
A group of actors also regretted that Cannes Film Festival ‘rolls out the red carpet for men and women who attack’, and “sends the message that in our country we can continue to exercise violence with impunity, that violence is acceptable in the places of creation”. Laure Calamy, Jérémie Renier, Bastien Bouillon and Ophélie Bau are among the signatories of this forum published in Publication.
When asked about the controversy, Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, declared (via 20 minutes):
I’m the last person who can tell you about any of this, because if there’s anyone in the world who wasn’t interested in this high-profile trial, it’s me. I don’t know what it is, I’m interested in Depp as an actor.
The actor isn’t worried
During the press conference of Joan of Barry organized in Cannes this Wednesday May 17, 2023, Johnny Depp spoke about the people who criticize his coming to the Croisette. The actor was very clear: he doesn’t care at all. He stated about it (via variety AND The Huffpost):
What if one day they decide they won’t let me come here or go to McDonald’s anymore? And that this sentence is for life? Somewhere in the world there are maybe 39 people who are mad at me if I eat a Big Mac. Who are these people? Why are they interested?
The actor has added a layer to these “anonymous” who express themselves “behind the computer screen” and who “have time to waste”. For him it is not necessary to worry about their remarks and he believes them “these people should do some thinking and ask themselves what it’s really about”.
Arguing that “most” of what has been written about the media “over the past five or six years” was justa “horrible fiction”Johnny also assured that he “doesn’t feel boycotted in Hollywood”, because “he doesn’t think about Hollywood”.
