Tom was adamant, Jerry [Bruckheimer] he was inflexible. Obviously I’m a huge fan of Val Kilmer, not only as Iceman, but also in Tombstone and Heat. The opportunity to work with him is a dream come true. And having him in a movie like Iceman was pretty epic. Jerry and I called Val. We brought him in, we talked to him about the movie and it was Val who really understood how he could be there. Then we worked a lot on the scene and on this relationship. And that’s great because they were rivals in the first movie. Of course, we have that last scene in the first movie where that rivalry turns into friendship. And now let’s see 35 years later how that friendship evolved, how Iceman is his wingman and is still looking for Maverick.
Maverick and Iceman were memorable rivals in 1986 best gun but, after the central events of the film, the two Marine pilots decide to put their differences aside. Look who he worked with, you know? It’s amazing to see him really lean on that side of what he’s capable of with another legend. It is obviously one of those few days on set that I will never forget.
