It’s been seven years since the release of Mad Max: Fury Roadand director George Miller is now 77. However, according to the new trailer from Three thousand years of nostalgia, the man continues to contribute to the world of upcoming films with the energy of a twenty year old. It’s essentially a stream of stunning images, and not everything can happen soon enough.
Based on the story The Djinn in the nightingale’s eye by AS Byatt, Three thousand years of nostalgia Tilda Swinton plays Dr. Alithea Binnie, an academic who attends a conference in Istanbul where she has a fantastic meeting. She meets a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers to grant three wishes and, to prove his legitimacy, the magical being tells him stories from her past. In terms of look and feel, Elba’s character is very different from the style loved by the genius of Aladdin to which the public is used to.
Tilda Swinton’s character asks the question, “What do you do with three wishes?” It is in answering this question that George Miller’s brand of crazy energy and colorful worlds comes into play, as we see glimpses of these stories in Three thousand years of nostalgia trailer. Everything from Idris Elba’s dusty transformation into his Djinn form to a rather curious spider-like creature is thrown to the public in quick succession.
They also give us extreme visions of any possible excess. It seems that sex, death and revenge are manifesting Three thousand years of nostalgia; and it seems that some chaos awaits Idris Elba as well. An accidental sentence with the word “desire” embedded in its content is all Tilda Swinton has to do to complicate matters. For such a desire-conscious person, Dr. Alithea Binnie is not immune to the most inexperienced mistake when it comes to coveting entities.
If you don’t remember that Miller was also the madman behind the crazy max series, the views seen here should be an easy reminder. George Miller won’t slow down anytime soon, because the furious the prequel is on deck to begin production in the next future. If his latest film is any indication, Miller will fire all cylinders for years to come; although there is Sara there will be some differences between this new chapter and road of fury.
It’s a beautiful and amazing thing to see in action, and very soon audiences will have the opportunity to take part in the sheer madness that is this film. the trailer for Three thousand years of nostalgia officially debuted with the film’s world premiere today at the Cannes Film Festival, but viewers here in the US will have to wait a bit to see it. (Unlike another Cannes star Top Gun: Maverickwhich will be released in theaters just a week after Tom Cruise’s recent standing ovation).
Three thousand years of nostalgia it will conclude the summer and kick off the autumn season when it hits theaters on August 31st (exclusively for the theater).
