Noah Schnapp’s character in Strange things – Will Byers, an introverted D&D lover – has been through a lot in the four seasons of the Netflix Original series, but one thing has remained constant: his hairstyle. He survived Upside Down for weeks, possessed by the Mind Flayer and more, but apparently no chaos or trauma inspired a twist on the classic bowl cut.
As you can imagine, it’s not something Schnapp was thrilled to go back to whenever he started shooting a new series of episodes, but it’s something creators Matt and Ross Duffer obviously insisted on keeping.
The bowl cut (at which Noah Schnapp had previously expressed his anger) appeared in a recent knowledgeable person interview, and the actor explained that he went several times to visit the Duffer brothers alluding to his wish that Will Byers had something else in mind. However, he has been rejected each time and he doesn’t expect things to change anytime soon. Schnapp said,
I’ve talked to them so many times like, ‘Hey, are we thinking about a new hairstyle for Will? Another season is still missing, but they are quite faithful to this cut. I think it’s a true classic 80s haircut, so I don’t think we’ll be losing it anytime soon.
But is it really a “true classic 80s haircut type”? According to Noah Schnapp, it’s Matt and Ross Duffer’s excuse to keep Will Byers with his familiar style, but over time it’s something the actor has come to question, with some influence from his parents, who apparently they were teenagers. . in the penultimate decade of the twentieth century:
That’s what they say, but then I talked to my parents and they were living in their 80s. They said they weren’t 16 with that haircut, so I don’t know.
Maybe you’re right. Bowl cuts were certainly popular at some point during the 20th century, but it was more of a 1960s thing that was particularly influenced by the style worn by beloved Beatles members. never arose Strange thingsbut perhaps Winona Ryders’ Joyce Byers is quietly a controlling Beatlemaniac who insists that her son never fails to pay homage to her greatness with her hair.
About six years after his first introduction to Will Byers, Strange things fans can continue to witness the power of the bowl cut with the new series of episodes just arrived last Friday (opens in a new tab). All you need is a Netflix membership to start watching right away … although you may want to make sure you have some gaps in your programming, because the episodes are too long (opens in a new tab).
