Stranger Things actor David Harbor spoke about bipolar disorder and how financial difficulties have worsened mental health over the years
David HarborO Hopper in Stranger Things (2016), vented about mental health and how fame interferes with personal life in an interview with the magazine Big Issue. The actor revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 26, after ending up in an institution due to a crisis.
“I was definitely out of the system. And there were times in my life where I could have easily stopped on the streets, but luckily I had a family that could support me through these tough, difficult times,” she explained.
harbor also highlighted how financial difficulties have worsened mental health over the years: “It’s not like a broken leg. What defines madness is social inadequacy. But it is very socially inappropriate, in a sense, to not have enough money to live on.”
The actor added: “Being mentally ill is a natural condition of poverty. When you can’t participate in society going out to buy lunch and go into a store, for example, it drives you crazy.”
Furthermore, harbor explained how he didn’t expect to play such successful roles after he was older. “I reached the age of 35 and, in my mind, I had been quite successful. I could pay rent for an apartment, have food on the table and that made me very happy,” he revealed.
Despite the success of Stranger Things, the actor admitted that he did not expect the series to bring such a positive return. “Even when we were filming it, I felt like this was a show that I would love but no one would watch,” he said. “It was unlike anything I’ve experienced in my career. I started getting tons of text messages saying, ‘Stranger ThingsIt’s amazing, I love this show’.”
