Black Mirror: when the Netflix platform makes fun of itself

Series black mirror Backwards

Four years after the fifth season of the series created by Charlie Brooker, black mirror is back with five new episodes. These, available on Netflix since June 15, 2023they follow as usual the principle of the anthology, each having its story and its cast. Their quality is therefore unequal, especially since of the five, three do not really have identity black mirror. Indeed, the episodes “Loch Henry”, “Mazey Day” and “Demon 79” can be classified respectively in the genre of true crime, horror and fantasy. In any case, none of these three become the type of anticipation and science fictionthe one who made all the interest and success of the previous seasons of the series.

A copy of Netflix at the center of the first episode

We still find an interesting dystopia, in the pure spirit of Black Mirror, with the first episode entitled “Joan is awful”. In it, a young woman named Joan (Annie Murphy) realizes that a new series offered by the Streamberry platform is a carbon copy of her life, capturing all the events of her daily life. The fictional streaming platform Streamberry is an alleged Netflix parody. Everything is there: the colour, the visual and sound card (the famous “tu-dum”), the welcome menu, and we also distinguish the second episode of this new season of black mirror“Loch Henry”, plus a mockumentary about Will Poulter’s character in the interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

A terrifying abyss

In this story, Joan discovers a series inspired by her daily life. Series in which she is played by Salma Hayek. But since this series “Joan is horrible” (that of her with Salma Hayek) tells the everyday life of the “real” Joan, the one played by Salma Hayek therefore also discovers that a series of her is being made about her life. And that in this she is embodied by … Cate Blanchett. So we have a series within the series within the series… And so on. A dizzying abysswith series such as nesting dolls that would never end.

How is all this possible? In that future, assumed to be quite close, a quantum computer, owned by Netflix (sorry, from Streamberry), accumulates data on its users, listening and viewing them through all connected devices, in order to create dedicated programs produced entirely in CGI. It is therefore not Salma Hayek who stars in the series, but it is her image of her, of which she has left the rights to use, which is recreated. A legal remedy to prevent this formal violation of user privacy ? None, since a clause appearing in the general conditions of use allows the company to create this type of programs…

An absolutely immoral approach, even questioned in the episode. Why did Streamberry choose to emphasize a person’s flaws rather than his qualities? Simply because tests and surveys have shown that a more “positive” content did not interest users.

Netflix Offered No ‘Resistance’

References to Netflix and its shows are scattered throughout the episode, to the point where one wonders if the streaming giant is just getting away with it. a bullet in the foot take this parody too seriously. But the episode Joanna is terrible avoid this risk by offering a happy ending to its characters and a less happy ending for Streamberry. However, the episode remains very critical of the possible technological drifts in the streaming sector and, strangely, explained Charlie Brooker in a long interview with Empire that Netflix left him White paper.

We just said, “We have this streaming platform called ‘Streamberry’ in one episode… Can we make it look like Netflix?” They got back to us pretty quickly – oddly quickly by the way – and said, “Yeah, okay.” I can assure you there was no resistance from them. Which is a little disappointing, because it would have been nice to say, “I did it regardless of what they thought, because I’m an anarchist!” But no… This episode is quite meta and weird. That I see the episode in the editing room is one thing… But to think that the public will watch it right on the Netflix platform? It’s pretty crazy.

It should be noted that, in addition to this episode, the second of the season, “Loch Henry”, enjoys telling the story of the production of a documentary true crime, which swerves in large widths, with a good deal of violence. A documentary which, in the episode “Loch Henry”, is bought and broadcast by… Streamberry !
