Farang: Xavier Gens turned down Booba for a major role

Faranga deadly fight

In his very brutal action movie Farang, Xavier Gens pits his main character Sam (Nassim Lyes) against another foreigner living in Thailand, a local boss, Narong. This he proposes to Sam one shot, easy, a bit of illegality that will allow him to have the money to buy the land on which he wants to settle with his wife (Loryn Nounay) and his adopted daughter. Obviously nothing will go as planned, e a furious and deadly gear will undertake …

Narong is played by Olivier Gourmet, a prestigious Belgian actor who also stood out with the Dardenne brothers (The promise, Son, The child) than in more nervous productions such as To go fast, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1OR The SK1 deal. In this role, for Xavier Gens and alongside Nassim Lyes, he plays a terrifying antagonist of banalityof a disturbing authenticity.

The hip-hop star, a “cliché”

Met on the occasion of the release of Farang at the cinema on June 28, 2023, Xavier Gens explained to us that originally, for the role of Narong, he was offered a great star of rap and hip-hop. A well-known character, since he is a rapper and producer Buba, to whom we owe several iconic pieces of French rap for more than twenty years. But the director refused, wanting to avoid a “cliché”.

I was offered Booba. I declined, as I thought it was cliché. I have a lot of respect for him, but I think we would have ended up with something too urban, which was not the idea of the film. I also wanted to be authentic there, and avoid the cinematic artifice of chasing the hip-hop star to play the bad guy. It is a 90s action film convention of American culture, while when you go to Thailand and see the reality farang, are quite white, fat and libidinous. So I said to myself… I was going to say: “I’m going to get a Belgian actor” (laughs).

We reassure our Belgian friends, it’s a joke and Xavier Gens then claims that he met Olivier Gourmet the perfect enforcer for his villain. We will therefore have to wait a little longer to see Booba debut in a fiction on the screen, elsewhere than in his clips. But it should be soon, as he is creating and writing a series for Prime Video, Ourikain which it is written a small role. Ourika is scheduled for 2023.
