To Rolling Stone Brasil, Amazon Prime Video has granted access to all eight episodes of The Boys season 3 – and we tell you what we think without spoilers
the boys It’s one of those shows that are here to stay in pop culture. It came by surprise, in 2019, as a novelty in a saturated superhero genre. The series brought to television by Eric Kripke surprised by the violence and an idea of what heroes would really be like if they existed in the real world: corrupt, evil and full of themselves – and that’s not hard to imagine, unfortunately.
It is worth remembering how the production is based on the homonymous comics created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertsonand it takes place in a world in which the Seven are the most powerful heroes. However, the overwhelming majority of them use their powers for evil, so Hughie (Jack Quai), gross (Karl Urban) and the rest of the “lads” are tasked with stopping them.
The third season of the show takes place exactly one year after the second. Hughie remains in the office Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) to try to overturn the Vought/Seven by legal means, gross and the other “boys” continue to hold supers (but without killing them), homelander (Antony Starr) keeps getting crazier and starlight (Erin Moriarty) continues to evolve more and more in the Seven, a great counterpoint to the other teammates.
In the first few seasons, the boys focused a lot on presenting this world and characters with perfection, while the second delved deeper into social criticism with plenty of humor. Quite exaggeratedly, the biggest target is hero productions, be they Marvel, A.D, etc. The third year, on the other hand, is right in the development of characters and conflicts (internal and between groups), but suffers from the constant repetition of these exaggerations and criticisms.
However, there is no way for the series to simply stop making satires of the genre, it is at the heart of it and the comics. Even doing this well, the narrative often becomes predictable. That is, the public knows when to expect explosions of bodies, rivers of blood and social and political criticism. The cool thing is that the third season updates this, and makes fun of the far right, with racist, homophobic and neo-Nazi speeches.
Even with this problem, the balance of season 3 remains positive. In the first six episodes, mainly, several characters begin to gain more depth, such as Milk (Laz Alonso) with the traumatic past with Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), Hughie in an attempt to prove itself strong, the relationship between French (Tomer Capone) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), between others. But that means leaving others aside, like Maeve (Dominique McElligott), who appears only at important points, and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), for example.
As the trailers revealed, gross get access to Compound V to have powers (we won’t reveal how), and this has a direct impact on his relationship with the guys, with several discussions about morality and fighting what you’ve always been against “lowering” to the level of antagonists. It’s quite cool to see this duality, mainly due to the ironic and fun performance of Karl Urbanalways one of the highlights.
An interesting point is how the new season deviates a little from the focus on the action (it remains very present, but with less screen time), to show these conflicts and development of each character chosen to progress in the narrative. One of the most important parts of this are glimpses into the relationship of gross with his father and brother in adolescence, and how this reflects on the way the character interacts with Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) and the own Hughie.
Unfortunately, some characters leave a lot to be desired. Until the moment, The Deep (Chace Crawford) continues as someone totally disposable, with no relevance to the plot. The same goes for A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), who needs the entire season to resolve a conflict that could have been resolved in a matter of a few episodes.
Difference from comics
It’s no secret that the series the boys follows quite different paths from the comics, such as becca (Shantel VanSanten) survive after having Ryanthe sex change of storm (Aya Cash), between others. One of the most fundamental changes in season three is with Soldier Boyinterpreted very well by Jensen Ackles.
in the comics, Soldier Boy had more than one version – and the last one to assume the mantle was an extremely fearful person. In the series, it is different: the “hero” is much more fearless, in addition to having references that no character understands because he is from a different time. He is quite similar to homelander for being loaded with prejudices, but uses a lot of drugs.
However, the showrunner Eric Kripke did not know how to take advantage of one of the most important elements of Black Noir of the comics. The character, after all, was sidelined very quickly – and one of the biggest potential the boys failed miserably.
Is season 3 worth watching?
the boys, as always, continues with great excellence. With good direction, script and performances, the series follows a safe option that will definitely entertain you and hold your attention, even with wasted chances, shortcuts in the script and repetitions of formulas.
It is worth remembering that the first three episodes will be made available next Friday, 3rd. The rest of the chapters will be made available once a week, every Friday, in the catalog of Amazon Prime Video.

Karl Urban, from the boys, would you play Wolverine? actor responds
after departure from Hugh Jackman from the paper of Wolverineseveral fans of the hero of the Marvel started to publish on the internet who they would like to see as a successor. One of the favorites is Karl Urbaninterpreter of Billy Gross in the boyswho answered whether or not they would accept the post of logan.
In an interview with The Guardian, the actor was happy with the support if he played the character, but was against it for a specific reason. “Oh really? I’m flattered, but you need to think rationally about it,” he stated. urban. “I’m what, two years younger than Hugh Jackman?”
“I mean, if I were a studio looking for someone to play the role of WolverineI would choose someone who would [pelo menos] three movies,” continued the star in the conversation with the site. “You won’t get three movies from the same franchise with Karl Urbanunless you want a Wolverine 65 years old.”
As Screen Rant pointed out, it remains to be seen whether the disney agrees with fans when it comes to the type of actor best to portray Wolverine on the big screen, when the X-Men officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Karl Urban may be right when he says how the studio will be looking for a younger actor, because they hope to establish the mutant as an ongoing presence in the franchise.
However, the company might side with fans in realizing how maturity really is a good thing when it comes to Wolverine.
