Xavier Dolan concludes his career as a director
Xavier Dolan started making films at an early age. When he was just twenty years old, his first feature film, I killed my mother, it was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. Seven more will follow, including the last one, Matthias and Max it was released in 2019. In 2022 he directed his first series, The night that Laurier Gaudreault woke up, broadcast on Canal+.
But after a 14-year career, the director decided to stop the cinema. He had already spoken of this hypothesis last November, claiming that he felt tired, and that he no longer felt the need to tell his story.

Thus, in a recent interview granted to the Spanish newspaper El País, announced the end of his career as a director. He confides that he is abandoning cinema and directing, because he “no longer has the strength” to commit “two years to a project and hardly sees anyone else”:
I put too much passion into it to get so much disappointment out of it.

His last directing experience in the Canal + series seems to have had a significant impact on its decision-making process. While it was very well received by critics, it was only broadcast in four countries: France, Spain, Canada and Japan.
Why didn’t anyone else buy it? Why is it filmed in French, why does it only have five episodes? (…) I end up wondering if my cinema isn’t bad, but I know it isn’t.

I invested my salary in production and my father had to lend me money. It’s a very thankless process, I’m tired and discouraged. The simplest solution is to advertise and build a house in the countryside
One last project for HBO
Xavier Dolan, however, has one last project to honor before finally retiring. This is a series, in English, for the HBO platform. There is currently no information on this project. At the same time he will continue his acting career.
