Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan’s new event film

Three years after fiddling with our brains with principleChristopher Nolan returns to the cinema with his new event film: Oppenheimerin theaters from July 19.

As the name suggests, the film is a historical biopic dedicated to J. Robert Oppenheimer, the iconic and controversial American physicist. The film explores Oppenheimer’s life and career, who played a key role in the development of the first atomic bomb during World War II.

It traces his journey from his beginnings as a promising scientist to his involvement in the Manhattan Project and his role in America’s nuclear program. Leaning on complexity of his personalitythe film also examines the moral dilemmas and devastating consequences of his scientific discoveries.

To play the lead role, Christopher Nolan relied on one of his favorite actors – Cillian Murphy. Alongside her we find an XXL cast, notably made up of Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon or even Florence Pugh. The latter embodies Jean Tatlock, a brilliant doctor, who had a passionate romantic relationship with Oppenheimerfrom 1936 until his suicide in 1944.

The film includes several sex scenes between the two characters, as well as a long dialogue scene in which the two protagonists are completely naked.

Cillian Murphy defends the film’s sex scenes

In an interview given to The Sydney Morning HeraldCillian Murphy talked about the sex scenes of Oppenheimer, claiming that they were not free. He also wanted to salute the performance of his fellow player:

These scenes were written deliberately, he knew they would cost him general public classification (…) They’re not free, they’re perfect. And Florence is just amazing. I’ve loved his work since Lady Macbeth and think it’s phenomenal. She exudes a presence both as a person and on screen that is astounding. The impact she has in the film, considering the size of her role, is nothing short of amazing.

A sensational debut at the box office

This summer, the cinemas are full between Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Barbie AND Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan’s film is off to a great start and is already approaching $200 million in box office receipts worldwide (for an estimated $100 million budget). In the US, it started out better thanInterstellar AND Start.
