Taika Waititi and Thor’s pitch change
Taika Waititi he joined the Marvel family by directing Thor: Ragnarok (2017). The director brought in a dash of craziness and humor that the superhero incarnate was sorely lacking Chris Hemsworth. Not enough to convince us (see our review), but enough for the public to flock to discover this new adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With over $850 million in box office receipts worldwidethe film was a major success, motivating Marvel Studios to keep the director for a sequel.

This sequel, Thor: Love and thunder (2022), was once again a hit, this time grossing over $760 million at the worldwide box office. A little less than the previous one, but still a success. From then on, we can expect the New Zealand director to return to direct a third film, which would therefore be Thor’s fifth adventure. Especially since the end of Love and thunder maintains an opening with Thor now in charge custody of Gorr’s daughter.
A badder villain than Hela Thor 5
Currently, Thor 5 it has not been made official by the studio. According to rumors, the film is still in development. And a recent statement by Taika Waititi goes in this direction. The director spoke in the book Marvel’s Thor 4: Love and Thunder Movie Special Bookscheduled for September 2023 and of which Selection shared items. Asked then what is left to do with Thor, the director replies:
It has to be something that seems to continue the evolution of the character, but still in a really fun way and giving him things to deal with that seem to reinforce the obstacles he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a weaker villain than Hela. I feel like she needs to step it up a notch and add a more formidable villain.

Taika Waititi would therefore like a superior opponent to the antagonist of Thor: Ragnarok. While it might be enticing on paper, the MCU often tends to make big promises for movie villains, before disappointing by not pursuing their ambitions. However, this statement could go in the direction of Chris Hemsworth’s desire for a little more seriousness. In the face of certain criticisms of Thor: Love and thunder (see ours), the actor had admitted it the humor was too muchso much so that the film was “got too ridiculous“.
Fans will still have to wait a little longer before that Thor 5 is confirmed by Marvel and goes into production. And if we go by the studio’s announced schedule so far, it won’t be until 2025.
