A first film with personal material

In A star was born, Bradley Cooper is behind and in front of the camera. In this fourth remake of the classic A star was born by William Wellman Jr. (1937), plays Jackson Maine, a country star in decline and lost his addictions to alcohol and drugs. One day he meets Ally Campana (Lady Gaga), a young singer whose great talent he discovers. He takes her under her wing, they fall in love with her and she becomes a star herself, little by little eclipsing Jackson.

For this role, which earned him a new Oscar nomination for best actor in 2019, Bradley Cooper draws on his past. Indeed, a long-time addict to alcohol and cocaine, the actor used this experience – closed since he got sober in 2004 – to create the character of him. She recently told adventurer Bear Grylls, while appearing on his show Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge and that the latter questioned him about his “crazy years“.

The Roaring Twenties? In terms of alcohol and drugs, yes. But he had nothing to do with fame. I was lucky, because I got sober when I was 29. I have been for 19 years now. (…) For “A star is born”, it made my job easier because it was easier to really immerse myself in this universe and this character. And, thank God, at that point in my life I was very comfortable with that, so I was able to do everything.

Open to discussion about his previous addictions, Bradley Cooper had brought up the topic in 2022 in an episode of the podcast “Smartless”. In the early 2000s, depressed by the difficulties of living off his talent and the notoriety that did not arrive, the actor was “lost and addicted to cocaineHe says everything changed in 2004, during an evening where he went a little too far. Motivated and supported by Will Arnett, his friend and co-star of the film The rockerhe therefore decided to fight against his addictions.
