According to the WHO, dementia affects more than 55 million people worldwide and Alzheimer’s disease accounts for around 70% of cases.
Symptoms of dementia may seem like normal signs of aging and can therefore be easily overlooked. Here are the changes that experts say you should pay attention to in order to get a quick diagnosis.
Deterioration of sense of smell
Do you increasingly miss the moments when the pan has finished cooking and started frying? Loss of smell can be a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, so it’s important to talk to your doctor, according to the National Institute on Aging.
Loss of interest in favorite activities
This is another change that happens in people with Alzheimer’s disease: they lose interest in activities they used to enjoy, or in everything. A 2001 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found this symptom to be one of the most underestimated.
Habit of putting things in strange places
We all forget from time to time where we put our phone or keys. It’s okay if you’re so tired that you put the milk in the cupboard. However, according to Mayo Clinic experts, people with Alzheimer’s disease are constantly losing things or putting them in strange places. This behavior should therefore be monitored.

Difficulty starting a conversation
To communicate, we need certain skills, as well as self-confidence. If you realize that before you felt good in the company of people, but now you are lost when you meet an old friend and do not know how to greet him, then this is a reason to consult a doctor.
Anxiety
If you’ve become increasingly anxious over the years, don’t ignore it: A 2018 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that as anxiety increases, the amount of beta-protein Amyloid in the brain increases, and high levels of them are a known feature of Alzheimer’s disease.
Pauses in conversation
It happens to everyone – we lose our minds, forgetting why we even started talking about a work colleague who had a Labrador who bit the courier. However, experts from the Alzheimer’s Association explain that after such pauses, people with this disease cannot resume the conversation without the help of another person – they need to be reminded of what was discussed.
