Fantastic 4: casting completed, filming, the new film is taking shape

Fantastic Four : complicated adaptations

This is an emblematic team of the Maison des Idées. Created in 1961 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Fantastic Four quickly became recurring and impactful figures in the Marvel Universe. Both in comics and in cinema. In all, four film adaptations have so far seen the light. The very first dates back to 1994 under the direction of Oley Sassone. An adaptation little known to the general public, which it mainly resembles a scam by producer Bernd Eichingerwishing to maintain the rights to exploit the characters. An absolutely amazing story that we tell you here.

We will then have to wait until 2005 for Tim Story to take over the queens of the saga with the cute and famous Fantastic Fourfollowed by Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer (2007). Then, in 2015, the director Josh Trank breaks his teeth with a new adaptation extremely criticized by the press and the public.

Good news about the reboot

Now that Disney purchased 20th Century Fox’s catalogMarvel Studios owns the operating rights to Fantastic 4 (as well as the upcoming X-Men, Deadpool, and Blade).

Currently, the director Matt Shakman is working on a new film Fantastic Fourexpected in theaters on April 30, 2025. In a recent interview with Collider, the director gave reassuring news about this reboot. He confirmed in particular that filming should begin next spring, provided that the actors’ strike in Hollywood is over.

He also promised that this new film Fantastic Four it would have been different from other MCU productions:

It’s different in many ways. I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we do things very differently, both story-wise and directing-wise. I wish I could say more. I’d like to, but I can’t. But I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and certainly nothing you’ve ever seen at Marvel before.

The director also stopped at the visual appearance of its characters. He explained in particular how to move from comics to the screen without it being too disruptive:

Despite the strikes, yes, we worked on the effects, the set design and building our world, and it was incredibly exciting. You know, how do you translate these skills into real action in a dynamic way? Because some things that work wonderfully in Jack Kirby are a little harder to translate to the screen. How do you make sure things are exciting but also believable? But I can’t say too much!

As for casting, Matt Shakman confided that he is closed, and I was really excited to share it with the world once the actors’ strike was over. At the moment we still don’t know who will play the different characters of the quartet. If John Krasinski is at the top of the list of preferences for the role of Reed Richards, of which he played a variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesshe however declared into the microphone of The casing that there was little chance of that happening. Continues.
