Snow White returns in 4K

On the occasion of the centenary of The Walt Disney Company, an important announcement: the release of the iconic film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in a fully restored version and in 4K on the Disney+ streaming platform. This new edition will be available from October 16ththus marking a historic turning point for the company.

This feature film, released in 1937, is not only Walt Disney’s first animated film, but also a precursor in the history of cinema. He was the first to use animation on celluloid, thus revolutionizing the world of animation. The recognition by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with a special honorary Oscar, presented by Shirley Temple to Walt Disney himself, is undeniable proof of this. Additionally, it is the highest-rated animated film on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Movies” list and was inducted into the National Film Registry in the first year of the registry’s creation in 1989.

A challenging restoration

The restoration of this masterpiece was no easy task. It is the result of the hard work of the restoration and conservation team at Walt Disney Studios, working closely with key artists at Walt Disney Animation Studios. This same team had previously worked on the film’s restoration Cinderella. Among these artists, Michael Giaimo and Eric Goldberg played a central role. Giaimo, set designer for Desire, Asha and the Lucky Star (in cinemas on November 29) the first two parts of Snow Queenand Goldberg, responsible for the hand-drawn animation for Disney’s latest short, have joined forces for this massive project.

Disney shared this comparison image of the 4K restoration compared to the original:

Goldberg shared his enthusiasm and respect for the project, saying it was both an honor and a challenge. He stressed the importance of stay true to the original colors of the film, evoking the muted palette and watercolor backgrounds reminiscent of the illustrated fairy tales beloved by Walt Disney. He hopes this restoration will inspire future generations of animation artists to recognize and appreciate the talent and care that went into this historic film.

Kevin Schaeffer, director of restoration at Walt Disney Studios, also expressed his pride in the project, noting the joy of working with the original film negative and using modern technology to restore the original beauty of this classic.

Looking forward to the live action

In addition to this 4K restoration that promises to be sublime, Snow White will also return in a live action adaptation on March 20. In the casting we will find Rachel Zegler in the role of the pale-skinned heroine, and Gal Gadot in that of her evil stepmother. A new adaptation that was not liked by the son of the director of the original cartoon, who did not hesitate to express his dissatisfaction.
