Friends: Matthew Perry’s Death or the Impossible Reality
“Matthew Perry is dead” it is with these four words that my Sunday morning began, and surely yours too. “Matthew Perry is dead.” No, it’s a joke. Not him, not so soon. Not Chandler! As the fog of sleep dissipated, I had to rush to write a short article, because current events do not tolerate delay. And even as I wrote the terrible news in black and white, my mind had trouble processing the information.
However, Matthew Perry is not part of my family, I have never even had the opportunity to meet him while carrying out my work. Why then does this disappearance affect me so much? And it affects so many people around the world? Very simply, because FriendsChandler, Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey and Ross have been a part of my life for over twenty years.
Being thirty years old, Friends began its journey in my life as a teenager. More than half of my existence has been punctuated by their adventures. They helped me improve my English, they were there in key moments, happy and dark. Friends it was my refuge.
“The end of an era”
Like a comfort object you keep close to you, they were my reminder of “home.” Thanks to them, I felt at home no matter where I was. More than a series, Friends embodies an era, a precious time capsule even if I didn’t fully experience it.
Friends They are my friends, the ones I always like to see again when the outside world scratches me a little too much. I curl up in these lines that I know by heart, and existence then seems a little easier to face, because they are there. I’ll be there for you.

But this Saturday, October 28, the passing of Matthew Perry shook this universe that I considered untouchable. Friendsit is a sanctuary, a place where the dramas of real life cannot penetrate. Matthew Perry and Chandler are so inseparable that their fusion seems almost magical. By losing the former, it’s as if a crack has formed in this idealized bubble, reminding us that even in the worlds we love most, the inevitable reality of life catches up with us sooner or later.
Hi Matthew, see you soon Chandler
Constantly rewatching a series has its downside: it crystallizes the characters in an eternal moment and, consequently, also their actors. We end up forgetting that, like us, they move forward with time. 2021 reunion special revealed, one of Matthew Perry’s last, if not last, on-screen appearances with melancholy the imprint of time on our memories.
Matthew Perry seemed to have felt the passing of the years more. While his life has not been a long, smooth river, particularly with his battle with addiction, which he detailed in his memoir published in 2022, his gaze retained that sparkle unique that he had instilled in Chandler.
Matthew Perry’s passing has rocked my world, as well as the lives of millions of other people. This October 28, 2023, a universal feeling crept into us: the loss of an old friend. Chandler embodied laughter, certainly, but also sweetness, innocence and awkwardness. He had this innate ability to lighten the most tense moments with a simple phrase, as his memorable last line of the series. A moment tinged with sadness in television history, where, true to form, it gave us one last dose of humor before the lights went out.
I hope he knew how much he helped lighten our lives, even if his was hard to bear at times.
If our return to Friends now it will be tinged with a sweet melancholy, one thing is certain: every time you visit Central Perk, Chandler will always be there.
