Lisa Tadeo has become synonymous with other women’s sex lives.

His explosive debut Three women, became a bestseller and international cultural sensation, for the provocative and sensitive transmission of sexual experiences of real objects. Last June he published his first novel, AnimalA spiritual continuation of her 2019 book and a collection of her early short stories this week. ghost lover – The title story is about a dating service owner sending a romantic text message with an army of cool girl experts – hits shelves. In all of her work, she explores what motivates modern women, expressing her willingness to discuss potentially taboo topics.

An author who is currently finalizing the television version Three women (Scheduled for a fall on Showtime) and is working on an adaptation Animalgo to deliverance ghost lover How to get back in shape. His first major published work was a short story based on the last days of Heath Ledger, which premiered in St. Louis. Wear. “And when I was little, I started submitting short stories to literary magazines,” she says. the hollywood reporter. “I was in my parents’ basement printing copies and my dad was taking me to the post office to send me letters of introduction.

Thaddeus spoke THR Approach a New England home to discuss how her latest project fits into her career and what she learned from the publication of her debut book.

Do you remember the theme of the first stories you wrote? Do you write about gender politics at age 12?

I read a lot in my youth. We were going to the municipal swimming pool and whatever it was was putting the book there. I read a lot of horror and murder that my father was lying about. And one summer my mother had flowers in the attic – You read as a child, it will irritate your brain a little. I wrote a lot in my brain about kidnapped children. There was a guy who was kidnapped in the ’80s, Adam Wall, and it shook the whole world and it was a really horrible story and I remember similar ideas being spread. Dark or supernatural things were my desire.

Were you going to create a hat trick – a novel, a nonfiction book and a collection of short stories – with your work?

I like stories a lot, but it’s hard to make money doing it. Publishers and literary magazines pay very little for them, so as excited as I was when I published one, I just couldn’t. In fact, I wrote my novel. Animal and stories ghost lover At the same time, I was enjoying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. So I went back to school Three womenAnd one of the reasons It was that writing fiction had always been my dream, and I knew that having a successful nonfiction book would take that away from me: if you’re successful in one way, people will naturally be skeptical of working for you in other ways. I think that’s part of what we do to keep each other, the desire to hold people to something.

Later Three women You talked a lot about some of our more puritanical reflexes, especially as they influenced reactions to the book. Hopefully some of them will still appear as the show’s launch approaches, but now it’s also releasing two more books on a similar topic. Have you seen a cultural shift in the way you source this material?

I think it depends a lot on the person and the day. Some see my honest writing, some see the catching of pearls. Funny, I just did a podcast and the host said that something written in the color of his eyelashes made me feel like, “Wow, he’s talking about me.” But I’m talking about me too. There isn’t a single beauty treatment I haven’t tried within my budget. But what I do is write about my obsessions and the obsessions of my friends and the women I’ve talked to. Three women; Its aim is to make people feel less alone and not to spread their fingers. I don’t tell people how they should feel, I say that’s how I felt or that’s how the women in my family felt. I also think that culturally we have a problem with just walking away from conversations or topics that we don’t want to be a part of: instead of leaving, we get nervous and tell other people what not to talk about. It’s more of the same obedience, only more embarrassing.

It’s been a year since the speech AnimalThat uses revenge narratives to address the areas of violence that arise. Three women; How your readers became, and I hate to use this original description, a tough heroine Animal?

I’m working on a film adaptation. Animal Now I think about it a lot. I’m going to generalize here, but I feel like half of the people who read the book are, “I feel seen. “This woman is obviously in a lot of pain and has created armor to protect herself.” There’s a saying that art should soothe the bored and disturb the comfortable, and I’ve always been more interested in the comfort of the bored. I lost my father when I was 23, at a time in my life when he was still doing a lot to take care of me, so I also created a lot of armor around that trauma.

I saw it anecdotally with some reactions from Francis, Sally Rooney’s protagonist. conversations with friends – People irritate him, but I see him as a young man who has depression, endometriosis and family problems…

That’s exactly what we can do to each other. Women adhere to these standards, and we can criticize women when they’re not even real people, they’re fictional characters. I think my work can also make some people angry. People can get angry when they see each other. How dare you dig up that part of me? I find this reaction very interesting, but in the end I’m just trying to honestly reflect on the life experience I’ve seen, especially for young women. Somehow I always write to my daughter so she has a compilation of what I went through. I don’t want to shock the world.

JoJo Wilden / SHOWTIME

There’s a lot to say about it Three women This crossed the line, in a good way, of publishing books; Do you think there are adaptation elements that will do the same with television?

It’s funny, you never know what will make someone mad. This is something we need to know because there is a lot of competition on TV and the networks don’t want people to turn off the show if the viewer doesn’t like something. There is a desire to attract attention, but not to push people away. One of the things I talked about a lot. [for the adaptation] He wants to see more male nudes than female nudes. We are not used to seeing this and there may be viewers who come to the sex scene and are upset. But for me it is very important that it appears in the eyes of a woman as opposed to a straight man. I wanted to respect the woman’s experience in every relationship and sexual encounter on the show.

You work on the series yourself as a writer and executive producer. Is there a training path?

What surprised me the most about the process of creating a TV is how continuous it is, and there are a lot of copying, for budget or production purposes. I didn’t know it would be so intense even that day, even if we can’t take it anymore if the weather doesn’t cooperate with what we have to shoot. More people and a lot more money are involved in broadcasting a television show than in creating a book. You start to realize, “Well, someone else’s opinion will add another two hours to my day.” (laughs.) But when you try to do something, you have to deal with everything. I hope all this is the reason.

Blair Underwood, who plays the main character Sloan’s husband, is mentioned. this day That the show is the riskiest thing he’s ever done…

He’s an amazing person and I knew from the start that he wanted [in the role]. This was something that couldn’t be missed. I just said, “Please let me talk to him and I have to convince him.” I talk about it all the time, but literally any line, no matter how it’s written, sounds good when you say it. So let me just say that I’m really excited about it.
