THE French Hollywood’s favorite
Louis Leterrier is one of the few French directors to have had a successful career in Hollywood. A career on the big screen that began in co-production with France under the aegis of EuropaCorp The Courier, Danny the dog AND The transporter 2. Results that aroused the interest of Marvel Studioswho then entrusted him with the staging of The Incredible Hulkreleased in 2008. Since then Louis Leterrier has produced important productions across the Atlantic, and this year we owe him the blockbuster Fast and Furious 10. It is also announced at the end Fast and Furious 11scheduled for 2025.
A career of great commercial success: his films have grossed more than 2 billion dollars in revenue, a record for a French director, but one that wasn’t necessarily achieved when he directed The Incredible Hulk. In fact, during the filming of this Marvel film, in which he directed Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth and William Hurt, the friction with his casting was harsh.

The Incredible Hulk 2: Louis Leterrier gives details of what he wanted to do
Edward Norton hated Louis Leterrier’s speech
Guest of first episode of the “Watchalong” spin-off of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcastLouis Leterrier returned in detail The Incredible Hulk. He then mentioned the difference in tone of the film compared to Iron Man released in the same year and what the overall feel of the MCU would be, his first meeting with Marvel executives, the film’s soundtrack… But most importantly, he delved into his relationship with the cast, particularly with Edward Norton (Bruce Banner/Hulk) and William Hurt (Thaddeus Ross). And the atmosphere between them was nothing short of exceptional complicated…

Regarding the star of the film, Louis Leterrier begins by explaining that Edward Norton, during their meeting in New York, had I hated the tone of the movie… With humor, he says that the dinner was very pleasant, but that Edward Norton had completely rejected the project. But ultimately, as long as he has creative control over the film, he is then co-writer The Incredible Hulk, the actor accepts. During filming the two men agree, but the atmosphere changes completely when the end comes.
During filming everyone was connected. It got tense towards the end. Ultimately there was a lot of tension over the tone and degree of humor in the film. Although Edward is a very funny guy and all his friends are comedians, he was absolutely right in defending the serious tone of the film. (…) But I was surprised, because until then there had been no tension, and from one day to the next it was over between us. I feel a little guilty about that, because I love him and I enjoyed working with him.
“There was discussion about the size of the moustache”
Another actor with whom Louis Leterrier had a complicated relationship: William Hurt. As the director says, the latter, a great actor of composition, was very critical:
One day he shouted at me: “You don’t know anything about directing actors!” (laughs). Unfortunately for him, he was in the giant helicopter at the time and I was in control of it. So I moved the joystick all over the place, it shook it and it fell off. He looked at me and said, “I like you!” Well, he just wanted to have a little conflict. (…) Another thing, he didn’t want the mustache to make him disappear (laughs). The size of the whiskers has been debated. We clashed several times, but I think there are two types of actors, maybe three. There is the best friend, the partner, and the one with whom you have to argue, and who feeds on this conflict. This is how William Hurt worked.
