Master: Bradley Cooper becomes Leonard Bernstein
After the staging A star was born with Lady Gaga in 2018, Bradley Cooper returns behind the camera Masterwhose the release is scheduled on Netflix on December 20th. In this new film, set once again in a musical context, Bradley Cooper plays Leonard Bernstein, the famous composer and conductor, at different moments in his life.
The film, shot partly in black and white, traces, over thirty years, both his career and his private life, and in particular his chaotic marriage to Felicia Montealegre (played by Carey Mulligan). For this role, which should earn him a new Oscar nomination, Bradley Cooper immersed himself completely in the life of Leonard Bernstein, even physically (which sparked a controversy when the first trailer was put online). He also worked for six years on a crucial scene in the film, which saw him conducting a live orchestra.
Six years of work for six minutes of live
During a debate organized in Los Angeles after the presentation of Masterrevealed Bradley Cooper (via IndieWire) having taken six years to learn how to do it conducting an orchestra for a live film scene. This sequence, lasting six minutes and 21 seconds, reproduces a performance by Leonard Bernstein when he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in 1976 at Ely Cathedral.
“I was absolutely terrified” admitted Bradley Cooper, underlining the intensity of the experience of conducting the orchestra live for this crucial scene. To prepare, he studied a draft of Leonard Bernstein’s conducting of the time and took help from professionals , like the director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Quebecer Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who in particular was able to work thanks to the videos made by the latter to perfectly learn the gestures of an orchestra conductor.
See you on December 20th on Netflix to discover the result of this hard work.
