The Snow Circle: the real survivors appear in the film

The Snow Circle: the great Netflix success of the beginning of the year

In just ten days, the film The snow circle by JA Bayona entered the top 10 most watched non-English language films of all time on Netflix, with over 51 million views. A true success for this feature film, which tells with great realism the story of the survivors of a plane crash in the Andes in 1972, who had to face the worst to stay alive.

This tragic story, which shocked the whole world, is that of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which was carrying a rugby team and their loved ones. On October 13, 1972, the plane crashed into a glacier in the Andes, leaving the survivors of the crash in extreme conditionsat 3,600 meters above sea level where temperatures can drop below zero.

For 72 days, the survivors faced unimaginable challenges. Isolated from the world, without adequate food or means of communication, they had to draw on unexpected resources to survive. The appearance the most controversial and the most dramatic of their survival was the decision to resort to survival cannibalism, a decision taken in extreme desperation, so as not to die of hunger.

The snow circle not only tells the harshest aspects of this experience, but also explores in depth the psychology of the survivors, their relationships, their internal struggles and the solidarity that emerged in these inhuman circumstances.

Real survivors appear in the film

Of Flight 571’s 45 passengers and crew, only 16 men survived the crash and spent 72 days on the mountain. After this incident which turned their lives upside down, a good number of them recounted their memories in various works, and their precious testimonies brought light to director JA Bayona to best tell their journey The snow circle.

As a tribute, the director included some of the fourteen survivors, who are still alive today, in several sequences of the Netflix film. But you probably missed them.

Fernando “Nando” Parrado, who hiked the Andes for ten days to seek help, appears in one sequence at the beginning of the film, to the airport. We see him open the door to the actor who plays him as a young man, Agustín Pardella:

Roberto Canessa, the second survivor, who spent 10 days walking in the Andes with Nando Parrado, also appears in JA Bayona’s film, but in the end, during a hospital sequence, right behind the actor who plays him. A tailor-made role for this renowned cardiologist:

Carlito Paez, one of the survivors, has a slightly larger role, as he plays her father. We see him in a touching scene, during which he announces the names of the 16 survivors, including his son. Carlito Paez, now 70, was the youngest survivor of the crash (he was 18 at the time of the accident and celebrated his 19th birthday in the mountains). When he was very young he was nicknamed “the man of steel” for his resilience.

Other survivors appear stealthily in the scenes:

  • Daniel Fernandez Strauch : Appears in a church scene, sitting in the second row from the left.
  • José Luis ‘Coche’ Inciarte : Visible in a scene in a bar, playing a man reading the newspaper.
  • Antonio ‘Tintin’ Vizintin : Credited as an extra in a scene at Carrasco airport.
  • Ramon ‘Moncho’ Sabella : Has a very brief cameo at the airport, visible during a wide shot.

Also noteworthy is a touching cameo, not by a survivor, but by the nephew of Numa Turcatti, the narrator of the film, played by Enzo Vogrincic. Joaquin de Freitas Turcatti appears as the latter’s neighbor at the beginning of the film and greets him:
