The Kitchen: what is this new Netflix film?
Available from Friday 19 January, The kitchen is the first feature film co-directed by Daniel Kaluuya (the star of the horror film Go out). The story is set in a futuristic London where the gap between rich and poor has been pushed to its limits. All the public housing was purchased by private companies, except the one nicknamed “The Kitchen”, which continues to resist. This is where Izi (played by Kane Robinson) lives, a loner desperately trying to find a way out. This block is destined to be bought and the inhabitants evicted, but the inhabitants resist the police’s daily attempts to force them to leave, and survive as best they can.
The plot focuses on the relationship between Izi and Benji (played by Jedaiah Bannerman), a 12-year-old boy who has just lost his mother and who appears to be an important person from Izi’s past.
The film is in the top 5
The feature film, which divides enormously (like its rating on the aggregator Rotten tomatoes), have some sequences that could easily have appeared in dystopian series Black mirror. We think in particular of the company that made its fortune by recycling the ashes of the deceased into fertilizer, then transferred into a jar, so that the family can come and take care of the plant, which is destined to become a tree (provided, of course, that they pay the maintenance, risking ending up in the garbage).
Although it does not fail to divide spectators, The kitchen has still intrigued subscribers enough to enter directly into fourth place in the ranking of the most watched films on Netflix France (still dominated by the action comedy During the flight). We will have to wait a few more days to see if the film will succeed in establishing itself internationally.
