The actress spared no criticism of younger people, but did not fail to recognize that the current moment in society is better
Generation Z comprises people born between the second half of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2010s. There are those who consider, more specifically, those who arrived in the world between 1997 and 2010 worthy of the classification. In other words: they are those who are among their 12 and 27 years old.
Many of these people are already entering the job market. And the actress and producer Jodie Foster He hasn’t liked it very much.
Foster, who interestingly began his career as a child, revealed his thoughts on the experiences of young actors who are just starting to enter the scene. In an interview with The Guardian (via Consequence), the winner of Oscar for The Accused (1988) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) revealed that generation Z is good at authenticity, but falters when they simply don’t know how to relax.
The subject was approached because the most recent film by Foster, Nyadaddresses what it is like for a woman to grow old in Hollywood. When the reporter asks her for advice for younger actors, she says:
“They need to learn to relax, not to think about it so much, to know how to bring something that is theirs. Can I help you [os atores da geração Z] to discover that, which is much more fun than being, with all the pressure behind it, the protagonist of the whole story.”
Even offering to be a kind of “mentor”, Jodie did not ease the criticism. The actress declared:
“They (younger people) are really annoying, especially in the workplace. They’re like, ‘nah, I’m not in a good mood today, I’ll be in at 10:30.’ Or, like, in emails, I tell them, ‘This is all grammatically incorrect, isn’t it? Check your spelling.’ And they say, ‘Why would I do that? Isn’t that a kind of limitation?’.”
Exception to the rule
For every rule, there are exceptions. In the case cited by Jodie Fosterthere is Bella Ramsey. Part of the series cast The Last of Us, Bella received several compliments from the veteran, who recalled an event sponsored by the magazine Elle.
“I contacted Bella, because we didn’t know each other, and I said: ‘I want you to present this event’. It was a wonderful event about actors and people in film, but it’s also a fashion thing. The organizers were very proud of themselves because there were all ethnicities, but I thought, ‘yes, but all the participants still wear high heels and eyelashes’. There are other ways to be a woman and it’s really important for people to see that.”
Fosterthen brought Ramsey — who identifies as non-binary — for showing how the narrative could be different. The speech given by Bella was highlighted by Jodie as “the best”, as well as his look, which involved wearing “a perfect suit, beautifully cut, with a split in the middle and no makeup”.
Finally, the veteran actress explained why something similar could not have been done by her or her colleagues from generations before Z.
“Because we weren’t free… we didn’t have freedom. And I hope that’s what the vector of authenticity that’s happening offers: the possibility of real freedom. We had other things that were good. And I say: I did the best I could for my generation. I was too busy trying to figure out where I fit in and where I wanted to be in terms of feminism. But my lens wasn’t wide enough. I lived in an incredibly segregated world.”
