Christopher Nolan saw it Dune
This is enough to add further intolerance to the impatience for the discovery of Dune, part two by Denis Villeneuve. After the Los Angeles screening of Principle in 70mm and IMAX, Denis Villeneuve was there to moderate a question and answer session between the audience and Christopher Nolan. A daydream for any public admirer of their two filmographies, which have several similarities and in particular that of succeeding in the genre the spectacular blockbuster.

If a form of rivalry can therefore be maintained between the two, this is still quite respectful and supportive This is how Denis Villeneuve introduces Christopher Nolan :
I have the honor to introduce you to one of the best… In my humble opinion, I would say the best, and certainly the most inspiring and important, filmmaker of our time: Christopher Nolan.
Well received, Christopher Nolan then returned the courtesy to his colleague by donating it his opinion on Dune, part two, which he has already been able to discover. And the opinion of him really makes you want to see him.
What particularly struck me was the feeling of immersion in this world… We talked about it together, there is this palpable emotion, these sensations (…)
He continues by asking Denis Villeneuve where he draws inspiration for the details that make up this immersion, especially since many do not come from Frank Herbert’s novel. Christopher Nolan then underlines:
Without giving too much away, (Dune 2) contains so many unique images – so many things we’ve never seen before, consistently throughout the film – and I was so struck by the detail of everything…
“And for me The empire strikes again“
The director of Principle it doesn’t stop there, since compare this too Dune 2 to the saga Star Warsand more precisely the Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
In my opinion, it is not an exaggeration to say that if “Dune, Part I” was Star Wars, then this new film for me would be “The Empire Strikes Back”, which is my favorite of all the Star Wars films. I really think it’s an incredibly exciting expansion of everything you presented in the first film.
The Tom Cruise style promo?
Recall, in the summer of 2023, determined to bring a large audience to theaters, Tom Cruise participated in the promotion of Barbie, Oppenheimer AND Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny appearing on the networks, which is extremely rare, with his tickets to these films. He himself was then promoting the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, part 1. If Christopher Nolan didn’t show up, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie returned the favor to Tom Cruise by also showing up with tickets to the “competition”.
From there something was born around these films, the film HALF leaving July 12th and films by Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig, both upcoming July 19th. Unfortunately for Tom Cruise, his film was left out of the magical equation that birthed the phenomenon Barbenheimer. On his side, Barbie dominated the 2023 box office with 1.44 billion dollars of revenue earned. Of him, Oppenheimer, a 3-hour biopic, grossed 956 million and was critically acclaimed and is the ultra favorite of the prestigious award ceremonies to come – has already received five Golden Globes.
Not very profitable, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, part 1 therefore he did not attend the party, but on this occasion and on the initiative of Tom Cruise, this solidarity promotion of very ambitious productions had a virtuous effect. And it would seem that, this year, Christopher Nolan also lends himself to this practice celebrating the work of Denis Villeneuvea filmmaker who can be considered his most direct “competitor”. Dune it is in fact calibrated to perform at its best on a critical and commercial level, and its release is awaited by both the public and the film industry.
Dune, part two arrives in French cinemas on February 28, 2024.
