Love and Gelato: The Biggest Differences Between Book and Movie [LISTA]

Adaptation of Love and Gelato premiered on Netflix in June and brought a very different story from the book

love and gelato (2022) reached the Netflix last Wednesday, the 22nd, and it didn’t please the critics much, not even the fans of the story of Jenna Evans Welch, author of the book that inspired the film. On social media, many netizens criticized that the adaptation is nothing like the original plot.

Unlike other book-based streaming hits like the trilogy To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before(2018), love and gelato had 17% approval in the Rotten Tomatoes and grade 5.2 in IMDB. The plot accompanies Linaa young woman who travels to Italy to fulfill her recently deceased mother’s dream, and discovers many secrets about her family as she discovers Rome’s sights.

With that in mind, we’ve listed the biggest differences between the book and the movie, for those who want to give the story a second chance and read the original version. Check out:

Lina is a teenager and not a college student

In the original story, Lina is still in high school and even has plans to finish school in Italy, while the film shows the older character and already at university.

Book takes place in Florence, not Rome

In the book, Lina travels to Florence, as her mother studied in the city when she was younger – in fact, most of the story shows her visiting the sights her mother visited. While in the film, she lives in Rome and only travels to Florence in an attempt to find her father.

Lina lives in the cemetery with Howard, not Francesca

One of the curious points of the book is the fact that Howard live in a cemetery that is a war memorial. In the film, on the other hand, she lives with Francesca in a big house.

Alessandro does not exist in the book

In the book, Lina has a brief relationship with a rich and charming guy, but his name is Thomas, and there is no great development of his story, no conflicts with his father, as there are with alessandro in the movie. In truth, Lina spend a lot more time with Lorenzo than with Thomas.

Addie never goes to Italy

addie always called Lina and supported her through difficult times in the book, but she never traveled to Italy as she does in the film.
