Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan explains Michael Caine’s absence

The end of a long and prestigious collaboration

Christopher Nolan was in London on February 14th to receive the British Film Institute Fellowhsip, the highest award in British cinema, which rewards a notable contribution in the world of cinema or television. On this occasion, the actor Michael Caine was present in the audience, and Christopher Nolan took the opportunity to pay homage to his favorite actor, with whom he collaborated in eight films (the Batman trilogy, Prestige, Start, Interstellar, Dunkirk AND Principle).

Michael Caine is the actor who has worked the most with Christopher Nolan, followed by Cillian Murphy who participated in six of his films. So when the final casting ofOppenheimer was known, Michael Caine’s absence was immediately noted. An absence that the director explained with humor:

(Michael told me:) Okay, I think it’s time to stop. (…) I had to fend for myself. So, okay, I don’t have Michael Caine, then I have to have Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Cillian Murphy, Tom Conti, and I hope all these great actors add up to Michael Caine.

A well-deserved retirement

We therefore understand that Michael Caine rejected Christopher Nolan’s offer to participate Oppenheimer. And not because he was tired of collaborating with the director, but probably because he was getting older 89 years old at the time of filmingOppenheimer – on tour between February and May 2022 -, Michael Caine was already thinking about his retirement, which was made official in October 2023. He then told the Telegraph in this regard:

I am now 90 years old and can’t walk properly. I’m a little retired now.

So, barring a surprise twist, it would be his last film The Great Fugitive, announced in theaters soon. A well-deserved retirement for one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema.
