Dune 2the film above all

On February 28, 2024 we will be able to discover on screens what promises to be one of the major cinematographic events of the year: Dune, part two. After Dune in 2021, Denis Villeneuve returns to the opera again, pushing all the stops to offer an even more ambitious show. Around Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, other recognized talents were invited for this second work, in particular Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken.

Asked by ColliderDenis Villeneuve spoke deleted scenes From Dune 2, which we could potentially discover later, for example in the DVD and Blu-Ray editions of the film. But as was already the case Dune, there won’t be anyand the director explained why.

Sometimes I delete shots and say, “I can’t believe I’m deleting this.” I feel like a samurai doing hara-kiri. It’s painful, so I can’t go back and create a Frankenstein and try to reanimate the things I killed. It’s too painful. When he died, he died for a reason. But yes, it’s a painful process, but it’s my job. The film comes first. I think I’m very strict in the editing room. I don’t think about my ego, I think about the film. (…)

I honestly think when he’s not in the movie, he’s dead. I’m killing cherished moments and it’s painful.

A logical decision

As co-writer and director of Dune, part two – Denis Villeneuve thus decided to “protect” the film by giving it a single form, a single set of images. A way to express disinterest in what could be, for example, a “alternative ending“, the extension “out of film“of one of its sequences, or of a scene”unpublished“of its history, how many images would we discover After and in a different way than the film shown in theaters.

Ultimately it is a logical decision, even if the public is used to having a form of it, especially for blockbusters extension of a film after its theatrical release. From the distributors’ point of view, deleted scenes of a film are the way to increase its “lifespan” with audiences and to make physical editions of a film attractive by offering something “unprecedented”.

However, from the author’s point of view, and therefore in this case of Denis Villeneuve, it is not a practice that he considers useful – he even considers it “painful” – and therefore hopes that only the film exists in its final version shown to the public .
