Vincent Lindon will play “the role of his life” in 2025: this crazy project announced

Les Misérables: the great French project of 2025

In recent years, the trend towards ambitious adaptations of the great classics of French literature has spread in France. So, after the diptych The Three Musketeers directed by Martin Bourboulon, this is another famous adaptation by Alexandre Dumas that will arrive on our screens next summer: The Count of Monte Cristo with Pierre Niney as the protagonist. These three true blockbusters were produced by Pathé. But in 2025 the studio will face competition with the arrival ofanother ambitious project with a solid budget, based on one of the most famous novels in French literature: Unfortunate by Victor Hugo.

Already adapted numerous times, and in various forms, on our screens, this new film adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece will be directed by Fred Cavayé. With a budget of 30 million euros, the film is produced by Studiocanal. According to the first information revealed by the director a few days ago, the latter would like to tackle aspects of Victor Hugo’s novel that “have never been adapted for the screen”. He said that he particularly wanted to emphasize the opera’s female characters, such as Fantine, Cosette and Éponine.

Vincent Lindon will be Jean Valjean

Although no information has been revealed yet, The world states in his portrait dedicated to the actor dated February 16, that it was Vincent Lindon who was chosen to play Jean Valjean.

As a reminder, Jean Valjean is the main protagonist of the novel Unfortunate. His story begins when he is sentenced to nineteen years of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. His life is marked by this injustice and the stigma that accompanies him as a prisoner. After the liberation, the meeting with Msgr. Myriel represents a decisive turning point: despite yet another theft, the bishop offers him mercy and gives him the chance to start a new life. Inspired by this act of kindness, Valjean decides to redeem himself.

Under a new identity, Monsieur Madeleine, he becomes a successful businessman and the benevolent mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer. Throughout the novel he struggles to escape his past, persecuted by Inspector Javert, symbol of the implacable justice of the time. Jean Valjean is also a deeply altruistic character, dedicated to the protection and well-being of Cosette, Fantine’s daughter, whom he adopts. His complexity makes him a tragic and emblematic hero, fight against the social injustices of post-revolutionary France.

In Le Monde’s portrait, it is said that Jean Valjean is Vincent Lindon’s “ultimate reference” and that it will be the “role of his life”. As the newspaper recalls, the actor declared, in 2020, that he had proposed promulgate the “Jean Valjean law”to help people in difficulty.

Vincent Lindon will therefore succeed a whole series of famous actors who played the character before him. Among these we can mention Gérard Depardieu, Robert Hossein, Jean Gabin, Liam Neeson and Hugh Jackman.

Unfortunate filming is expected to begin at the end of 2024, for release in 2025.
