The Abyss on Netflix: what is this disaster film?
It is not uncommon for films that have never been released in cinemas, or that have not had the right to a major promotional campaign, still manage to establish themselves at the top of the most viewed content on Netflix. This is the case this week of a Swedish disaster film, new in cinemas, which rose directly to first place among the most watched films on the platform in France. AND The abyss (Avgrunden in VO), directed by Richard Holm.
The story focuses on Frigga (played by Tuva Novotny), who tries to balance her risky job as a safety manager at the Kiruna mine with family life. The situation becomes critical when her town begins to collapse into the mine, forcing her to fight for her life and the lives of her loved ones.
The abyss concentrates all the ingredients of the disaster film, starting with an introduction that immediately sets the tone, describing an impressive collapse of the ground, which traps the young people who have come to party in a wasteland.

Based on a true story
The film The abyss is loosely based on the true story of the town of Kiruna, located in Swedish Lapland. Kiruna is known for hosting the world’s largest open-pit iron ore mine, operated by the mining company LKAB. Over the years the intensive exploitation of the mine has led landslides and underground fissuresthreatening the stability of the city and the safety of its inhabitants.
Faced with these dangers, an ambitious project to move the city was launched. This project aims to move the historic buildings and parts of the city to a new location, approximately 3 kilometers east of the old site, to avoid the destructive effects of mining activity. This approach, considered as one of the largest urban moving operations in history, represents a logistical and emotional challenge for the residents of Kiruna. It is expected to last 20 to 30 years and cost 3 billion euros.
For those who know, Kiruna had already been the setting of the detective series Polar day with Leïla Bekhti broadcast in 2016.
