The Last Jediloved or hated movie
We can say it without taking too many risks: Star Wars is one of the greatest film sagas of all time. A cult work as a whole, started by George Lucas with Star Wars, Episode 4: A New Hope (1977). The director, screenwriter and producer thus developed two trilogies almost 15 years apart (between episode 6 of 1988 and episode 1 of 1999). We could have been satisfied with these six main films, but Disney decided otherwise by purchasing them, in 2012 and for 4 billion dollars, Lucasfilm. The company was then launched a new trilogy which, in a way, didn’t go as planned.
In fact, financially speaking, there’s not much to complain about Disney’s Star Wars trilogy. The three films, The strength awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017) AND The Rise of Skywalker (2019), together they grossed over $4 billion in global box office revenue. Yet a divide has arisen among fans of Star Wars that they reported their anger at certain choices. More specifically with The Last Jedi, much criticized work directed by Rian Johnson.

In The Last Jediwe find Rey missing meeting with Luke Skywalker who retreated to a small island (like Yoda before him). At the same time, the Resistance continues to be hunted by the First Order. And when Leia finds herself in a coma following an attack (and an absurd passage into space), their ship has no choice but to advance into the unknown waiting for a miracle. Which doesn’t please Poe Dameron, while Finn and Rose go in search of a man who can neutralize the hyperspace tracker of the First Order ship pursuing them. Eventually, Kylo Ren manages to make contact with Rey, who will want to bring him back to his senses.
Positive feedback from the press, but not only…
The Last Jedi started with a good intention. Rian Johnson wants bring something new within the saga Star Wars. Some loved his approach and his way of breaking codes. Especially the press, with several enthusiastic returns. AS Inrockuptible for whom it constitutes the “most beautiful conclusion ever offered to a Star Wars episode” and a “Dickensian and Spielbergian” work. Crazy movies I also really appreciated seeing a “two-hour space chase in the spirit of Mad Max: Road Fury“.
On the other hand, for Chronic arthad director Rian Johnson all wrong The Last Jedia film deemed “out of place”: “We expected it Star Warsthis is what we are served The Neverending Story“. Same story with Critic Who is writing:
This call for renewal poorly masks the film’s lack of singularity, which is based on small anecdotal passages (…) rather than really shaking up the substance of the issue.
Fans are very divided on Star Wars 8
But while conflicting opinions are common within the press, the division that existed among the spectators it was much more amazing with The Last Jedi. ON Rotten tomatoesthe feature film gets an average of only 42% positive reviews from the public. Which is an even worse score than the first two works of the prelogy Star Wars. A very low figure too Metacritic with 4.1/10, but on average higherIMDB with 6.9/10.
For many fans of Star Wars, Rian Johnson simply didn’t respect the saga. What we cannot deny is that the filmmaker constructed his film above all without thinking about it the coherence of the work compared to the previous film. The characterization of his characters therefore makes no sense if we take into account the events that happened before. We see it for example with Rey. In episode 7, she witnesses Kylo Ren murder Han Solo, whom she idolizes. It’s so surprising to see her so quickly in episode 8 consider him anything other than an enemy.
The gesture of discord
On the more symbolic aspects, some fans he shouted foul in front of a particular gesture. Luke’s, which at the beginning of the film he disdainfully throws the lightsaber away that Rey hands him. An action seen as an insult to Star Wars fans.
Furthermore, part of the audience had the feeling that JJ Abrams was trying to correct the situation with episode 9. In a scene from the last work of the Star Wars trilogy, Rey is about to throw her saber into the fire, but is stopped by Luca asking him respect this object more. A JJ Abrams tackle towards The Last Jedi ? The director said no, praising Rian Johnson instead.
Some say this film attempts to fix The Last Jedi, particularly during Luke’s lightsaber sequence. If that scene in Rian Johnson’s movie, when he brandishes the weapon over his shoulder, had been immediately followed by Mark Hamill’s line: “A Jedi’s weapon deserves more respect,” it wouldn’t have made sense. But one of Rian’s brilliant ideas in The Last Jedi was to build a real narrative arc around the character of Luke. He learned something. He has evolved. (…) This idea that Luke Skywalker can learn something too is interesting. For a child to hear Luke Skywalker say, “I was wrong,” I think that’s wonderful.
If the explanation holds, the outcome of the trilogy remains surprisingly shaky for a company like Disney, which seemed to blindly jump from one film to the next. Furthermore, questions remained unanswered, introduced characters were abandoned, like the boy with the broom at the end of episode 8…
