Code 8: the beautiful story

In 2020, the science fiction film Code 8 landed on Netflix and was an immediate success with viewers. The feature film directed by Jeff Chan enters the top 10 of the most viewed content in several countries around the world (including France).

Based on the short film of the same name released in 2016, the film is set in a world where 4% of the population is born with supernatural powers. However, instead of being seen as heroes, these individuals, often referred to as “Powers,” are marginalized and face discrimination.

The story focuses on Connor Reed, played by Robbie Amell, a young man with electrical powers who struggles to pay for medical care for his ailing mother. Faced with a lack of legal options, he finds himself drawn into the world of organized crime, where he uses his skills for increasingly dangerous jobs under the direction of Garrett, a criminal with powers played by Stephen Amell, Robbie Amell’s cousin.

The genesis of Code 8 it’s interesting since the film was made possible through crowdfunding. So, in 2016, they launched Robbie and Stephen Amell a fundraising campaign on the Indiegogo site, releasing the short film, with the initial goal of raising $200,000. The campaign ultimately raised over two million dollars through contributions, which helped fund the film’s production.

The sequel is available on Netflix

Four years later, the sequel, simply called Code 8: Part II is available on Netflix from February 28th. And the beautiful story continues, as the film immediately jumped to first place among the most viewed feature films on the platform.

Still brought forward by Stephen and Robbie Amell and directed by Jeff Chan, this sequel is set in the same universe as the first. and focuses on the search for a young girl, Pavani, who seeks justice for his murdered brother. He witnesses the wrongdoings of corrupt police officers and enlists the help of Connor (Robbie Amell) and Garrett (Stephen Amell) to achieve his goal.
