Tonight on TV: the Avatar star faces the void in a mind-boggling thriller

After AvatarsSam Worthington finds himself with his back against the wall

Sam Worthington was revealed to the general public in the late 2000s. On the one hand with The Terminator Reborn (2009), then especially with Avatars (2009) where he plays the role of Jake Sully, hero of James Cameron’s film. If this blockbuster left its mark on the soul of the general public, this was not the case With our backs against the wall (2012) despite the presence of the actor in the main role. Indeed, the thriller went unnoticed upon its release in France, with just 223,000 admissions. Worldwide, Backs to the Wall still grossed more than $47 million. But that’s still little considering its $42 million budget.

Too bad for Sam Worthington, who despite everything gave his all with this film. The actor plays Nick Cassidy, a former police officer accused of stealing a diamond. After escaping from prison, the man surrenders on the twenty-first floor of the Roosevelt Hotel and climbs onto the windowsill. While it seems ready to commit suicide, the police and Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks), the negotiator tasked with convincing him not to jump, arrive. Nick will then proclaim his innocence in this theft affair. But while all eyes are on him, his action may have another purpose.

Facing the void 70 meters above the ground

The concept of With our backs against the wall It’s effective to say the least. And the film, without being a masterpiece, works precisely through the tension created by seeing Nick on the edge of a building. Evidently we fear seeing it fall. Because the production had the good idea play the authenticity card. Indeed, it is not a question of reproducing such a dizzying situation in a simple studio with digital effects. Most of the scenes were therefore actually filmed on a building facade in New York. Sam Worthington then found himself more than 70 meters from the ground. Even though he was attached to the harnesses, facing the void didn’t help him play. Especially since he said in an interview that he did it slipped several times!

During a press conference (broadcast by The Hollywood journalist), Sam Worthington described this agonizing feeling he felt while filming. He also clarified that the scene in the film where we see him climbing onto the windowsill was actually the first time he did so during filming. The fear of him is therefore real.

Your hands are sweaty, your legs are shaking, your eyes are wide. It’s unnerving. It’s not so much the height that’s scary, but the fall and what happens if you hit the ground.

“I was lucky not to burst into tears.”

Nearby Daily Telegraph (through Digital spy), the actor insisted that it is It’s impossible to prepare for a feeling like that. And he admits that he almost panicked at the start of filming, but then gradually got used to it and became more confident.

It’s much higher than your brain can imagine. It almost doesn’t seem real. Adrenaline is trying to hold it all together, making it look like a strange painting. The first time I went there was the first time we had to shoot. I was lucky not to burst into tears or curl up in a ball. You can’t prepare for something like this. We can’t train.

It must be said that 70 meters above the ground, in the heart of New York, the force of the wind it didn’t help give confidence to the actor. But Sam Worthington managed to complete the filming of With our backs against the wall without accidents. Later, the actor was amused that he didn’t not at all expected these working conditions, while the title, Man on a ledge in VO (“Man on a Cornice”) it was quite clear. This is what he said on the Conan O’Brien show (video below):

I’m the type of actor who doesn’t read the script well enough. In the sense that I read it for the story and forget what I have to do. It was only on the first day of filming that I said to myself: but it’s finally going to be called ‘Man on a Fucking Corniche’!
