Daniel Day-Lewis, a persistent void
On June 20, 2017, a few months before the release of Ghost thread by Paul Thomas Anderson in which he plays the lead role, British-Irish actor Daniel Day-Lewis announced via a press release his retirement from acting, at the age of 60. “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all his collaborators and audiences over the years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will comment on it.“
Having appeared in 21 films between 1971 and 2017, he is to date the only actor to have achieved three Oscars for best actor (For My left foot in 1990, There will be blood in 2008 and Lincoln in 2013). Unanimously acclaimed by critics and audiences, ultra-selective in his projects, he is considered one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema, with systematically memorable performances.
“Ended.”
Almost 7 years after announcing his retirement from the sets, could Daniel Day-Lewis return? In remarks reported by director Jim Sheridanwho directed him My left foot, In the name of the father AND The Boxerit seems that unfortunately this is not the trend.
He says he’s done. We continue to exchange. I would love to work with him again. He is like everyone else. He opens up the streaming platforms and there are 7,000 choices, none of them good. The film has moved from public space to private space: you have the remote control and you can stop it. It’s not the same experience. It would be great to see Daniel come back and do something, because he’s so talented.
No one will contradict Jim Sheridan when it comes to wanting the actor’s return, nor will they question the transparency of his words, given that he is so close to Daniel Day-Lewis. However, if one were not to count on an immediate return of the actor to the screens, the fact that he does not look favorably on the metamorphosis of the film industry generated by streaming it could perhaps indicate that he has not retired to the point of having nothing left to do… And perhaps thinking of making up for it by leaving retirement? There is no doubt that both the industry and the public would welcome him with open arms…
