In just a few films, Spanish director Jaume Balagueró has established himself as a leading figure in horror cinema and psychological thrillers. His talent for creating oppressive atmospheres and his ability to manipulate the audience’s primal fears have become his signature. Venus is the second film of the horror anthology The collection of fear, under the aegis of producer Alex de la Iglesia. This film is inspired by the short story “The witch’s house” by the emblematic author HP Lovecraft, published in 1933, which integrates to the vast corpus of Cthulhu mythos developed by the author.
The plot follows the story of a dancer played by Ester Expósito, made famous for her role in the series Elite of Netflix, who after stealing a bag from the nightclub where she works, is chased by a gang of criminals. Seeking refuge, she ends up in her sister’s apartment, soon discovering that this place is hidden a presence far more terrifying than his pursuers.
The narrative framework of Venus transposes the horrific elements of Lovecraft’s tale into a contemporary context, depicting a struggle for survival against the forces both human and supernatural. Lovecraft’s original tale recounts the terrifying experience of a student who finds himself in a room haunted by the specter of a witch who escaped the Salem Massacre, with dreams that gradually merge with reality.
