Ourika: Adam Bessa met real traffickers for the Booba series

Ourikaa series with realistic intentions

It can be easy for an actor to indulge in cinematic inspirations when tackling a new role. Particularly in detective or gangster fiction, with interpretations such as obviously those of Al Pacino (The Godfather, Scarface) or Robert De Niro (The Free, Heat, Casino), considered models of the genre. Taking inspiration from them means taking the double jeopardy of not bringing one’s identity to the role on the one hand, and giving in to a vision on the other”fantasized“of the role, one’s own or that of the public.

That’s why Adam Bessa, interpreter of Driss Jebli In Ourika and actor who confided in us his obsession with precision, met some truly great traffickers to prepare for his role in the series co-created by Booba. He explained to us:

You need to be introduced by people in the industry. We meet them and it’s very interesting because it’s the opposite of cinema. These are people who do everything they can to avoid being seen. They are people of great discretion. When you see them, you might think they are engineers, people who work at Total. We don’t imagine that these are people who do this. Thus all clichés fall away and, for an actor in a role like this, it is the Holy Grail to be able to meet people who are traffickers of international stature. I had met people in this environment before, bandits, criminals, but not on this scale. It’s always very interesting.

“Videos of real traffickers”

In addition to these meetings, about which we feel that Adam Bessa will not say much more, it is also through the precious testimonies of Clément Godart, who later became a screenwriter and director 25 years spent in the ranks of the policethat the casting ofOurika He thus managed to penetrate the secret world of drug trafficking.

Sometimes, Clément could show us in a round table videos of real traffickers, of settling accounts, of cutting off the ears of a trafficker who owes money to another… We saw these videos, which we couldn’t find anywhere else part. It was super rich material to get into. For me, the more we are anchored to reality, starting from this base means taking the right path, before adding our personal universes. The risk, when dealing with policemen, with criminals, is to let yourself be carried away by your own imagination, or by what you think people want to see. You need to have a realistic and above all non-imaginative approach.
