One of the most talented and well-known actresses of her generation, Hunter Schafer participated in productions such as Euphoria, The Hunger Games – A Song of Birds and Snakes (2023) and Cuckoo (2024). Now, she has made a career decision: to stop acting in trans women’s roles.

It is worth highlighting how the artist does not want gender identity to be the only point of discussion about her, and that she tries to avoid saying the word “trans” during interviews, in order to ensure that her career is not defined solely by identity. During an interview with GQ, Schafer spoke about this subject.

“It didn’t happen naturally at all. If I let it happen, it would still be showing.”Transsexual Actress‘ before each article,” he stated. “As soon as I say [a palavra ‘trans’], she takes off. It took a while to learn that and it also took a while to learn that I don’t want to be [reduzida a] that, and I think that’s ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do.”

Especially after high school, I was tired of talking about it. I worked so hard to get to where I am, I overcame these really difficult points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.

Right away, Hunter Schafer explained how she knows “it’s a privilege” to be able to shift the focus beyond her gender identity: “It’s been very intentional. I’ve been offered a lot of trans roles and I just don’t want to do that. I don’t want to talk about it.”

“I know for a fact that I’m one of the most famous trans people in media right now, and I feel a sense of responsibility, and maybe a little guilt, for not being more of a spokesperson,” the actress continued. “But ultimately, I really believe that not making this the centerpiece of what I’m doing will allow me to go further.”

And I think going further and doing amazing things, in the interest of ‘the movement,’ will be much more helpful than talking about it all the time.
