This Korean horror film is breaking records overseas!



Exhumed : the success of two shamans

In recent weeks we have been hearing more and more about itExhumed, a Korean horror film directed by Jang Jae-hyun. The latter is not a newcomer to the genre since he made the short film 12th Deacon Wizardhe shot his first feature film, The Priests (2015) – kind of a Korean version of The exorcist (1974). With Exhumedthe director remains in the horror genre, but this time inside a shamanic atmosphere. In it, two shamans are hired by a wealthy family living in Los Angeles to save their newborn baby from a curse. The film arrived in Korean theaters on February 22nd and its success is already impressive.

In just 24 days of activity, Exhumed accumulated more than 9 million viewers in Korea. Then, a week later, the 10 million mark was surpassed. A first at the Korean box office in 2024. By way of comparison, Avatar: The Way of Water attracted 10.6 million viewers in 2022. Nothing impressive for the horror film as the numbers continued to rise, according to Expiration, more than 11 million entries registered since April 1st. Which puts it almost at the level of Last train to Busan (11.5 million entries).

But the success ofExhumed don’t stop there. Always second Expiration (via distributor Showbox), the feature film is also a success in other Asian countries. In Vietnam, Exhumed it became the highest-grossing Korean film, with over 2.23 million viewers, two weeks after its release in the country. Same pace in Indonesia where it set a new record with 2.3 million viewers.

A planned release in France?

Unfortunately, Exhumed has at this time no release date in France. But given the success achieved, we can hope that the Korean production will arrive in our theaters soon, or at least that a streaming platform will be interested. Even more so with the presence in the casting of Choi Min-sikbig star from South Korea, known here for his roles in Old boy AND I met the devil, there would be a chance to attract movie buffs.
