Cannes 2024: films in competition announced

Like every year in May, the city of Cannes will be transformed into the capital of cinema for the 77th edition of the Festival. A fortnight that promises great moments of cinema, if we want to believe it the films announced in the official competition this Thursday 11 April by Thierry Frémaux, general director of the festival. Big names from world cinema such as Francis Ford Coppola, Andrea Arnold, Yorgos Lanthimos, Jacques Audiard and Paul Schrader are expected, together with emerging French and foreign directors.

The event of this competition will obviously be the presentation at the official competition of Megalopolisthe last Dante film by Francis Ford Coppola, who returns to the Cannes festival after having won the Palme d’Or twice for Secret conversation (1974) e Apocalypse now (1979). Kevin Costner, George Lucas and George Miller are also expected on the Croisette

As for films out of competition, there are three major events at Cannes 2024, starting with the world premiere presentation of Furious, the new film in the Max Max saga, again directed by George Miller. It is, as the name suggests, a prequel to Way of Fury (already presented at Cannes), who is interested in Furiosa’s youth, starring Anya Taylor-Joy. The film will be screened on May 15 on the Croisette, before being released in theaters the following week.

Four days later, it is Horizon: An American Saga, the first chapter of Kevin Costner’s great western, which will be presented out of competition at Cannes. This film promises to be one of the great events of this 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Another event not to be missed for cinema enthusiasts will be the presentation of a Honorary Palme d’Or to George Lucasduring the closing ceremony on May 25th.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival will open on May 14 with The second actthe new film by Quentin Dupieux with a luxury cast.
