The plot of this new six-episode French series created by Fanny Robert immerses the viewer in a mysterious story, set in the picturesque but disturbing setting of a small village in the Alps. The plot begins in 1994, with a shocking event that shakes the foundations of local community: the collective suicide of a sect, called “Secte des Ecrins” led by the guru Caleb Johansson (played by Stefano Cassetti). This tragic event attracted national attention and left deep scars in the village, upsetting the prevailing peace and harmony.

Thirty years later, as the village tries to overcome its painful past and find some semblance of balance, a new crime revives old fears. A woman is found dead, murdered in a way that evokes the sinister rituals of the defunct sect. This brutal murder threatens to tear the community apart again, reawakening old resentments and buried suspicions.

At the center of this case is Jaro Gatsi (Hatik), a young delinquent who was looking for a new start in the Alps. With his troubled past, Jaro soon becomes the main suspect in the murder. However, far from resigning himself to his fate, he is determined to clear his name and discover the truth behind this mysterious murder.

In his quest to prove his innocence, Jaro finds an unlikely ally in Ida (Noémie Schmidt), an eccentric geek and tech expert, herself searching for her missing father (Jean-Marc Barr). Together, they form an unlikely duo, combining their unique abilities to unravel the threads of a plot that turns out to be much more complex than it seems. For her part, a young police officer (Camille Lou), obsessed with the history of the sect, intends to shed light on this new crime, despite being convinced that the jewel box sect has reformed.

As Jaro and Ida delve deeper into the investigation, they discover that current events are closely tied not only to the village’s dark history, but also to the secrets of one’s past. What they learn about themselves and the true motivations behind the murder draws them into a whirlwind of revelations and dangers.

Anthracite has all the ingredients to keep viewers in suspense until the end. In addition to being a hit on Netflix in France, the series could also be very popular with international audiences (like this French film which is enjoying huge success around the world). We will know in the next few weeks.
