Black Phone: Scott Derrickson returns to horror

In just two films, American director Scott Derrickson has made a name for himself in genre cinema. First in 2005, with The Exorcism of Emily Roseand above all with Leftpublished seven years later, and still considered one of the scariest horror films in cinema. After another genre film that did not convince the public (Deliver us from evil in 2014) then a small detour towards Marvel (Doctor Strange in 2016), Scott Derrickson returned to pure horror in 2022 with Black phonebased on the story of the same name by Joe Hill, son of Stephen King, published in 2004.

The story is set in the 1970s and follows a young boy named Finney Shaw, played by Mason Thames, who is kidnapped by a serial killer nicknamed “The Grabber” and played by Ethan Hawke. Finney finds himself locked in a soundproof cellar with a disabled black telephone taped to the wall. Strangely, this phone begins to ring, allowing Finney to communicate the killer’s previous victims. These spirits try to help him by giving him advice and clues on how to escape the cave, sharing their own tragic experiences and the mistakes they have made.

Last chance to catch up on the film on Netflix

Black Phone has been available on Netflix since last September. Shortly after its arrival, it quickly became one of the most watched films on the platform. But as all good things come to an end, Scott Derrickson’s feature film will leave Netflix on April 21st. So you have less than a week left to discover this film, if you haven’t already, and treat yourself to a good dose of terror, thanks in particular to Ethan Hawke’s animalistic performance.

And if you liked the film, know that a sequel is currently in preparation. Again directed by Scott Derrickson, it will mark the return of Ethan Hawke in the lead role (which legitimately raises quite a few questions). Its release is scheduled for 2025.
