Kaiju No.8 : What is this new anime?

On April 13, Crunchyroll launched a new anime that should delight fan of big monsters. Titled Kaiju No.8, the series is based on the manga of the same name by Naoya Matsumoto, published in July 2020. After 11 volumes published and more than 12 million copies sold, here is the animated version. The story is set in a world threatened by Kaijus, giant monsters that would give Godzilla a run for his money. We then follow Kafka Hibino, a 32 year old man who would like to join the Defense Forces to fight these terrible creatures. But for the moment he must settle for a less glorious job, since he is part of it the team in charge of cleaning the streets after a battle between a Kaiju and the Defense Forces.

However, his life will change after meeting Reno Ichikawa, a new recruit. As a mentor, Kafka introduced him to the profession. Only during their routine they come face to face with a Kaiju, from which they barely manage to escape. It was then in the hospital that Kafka sees a creature merge with himand turn him into a monster. A form that he can take as he wishes, but which he will obviously have to hide from the Defense Forces.

An anime that is amazing!

From the first episode, Kaiju No.8 it sets the tone, with its dynamic animation and perpetual camera movements during action scenes. So let’s think about it a bit Attack on Titan, which in its time had made its mark with its visual qualities. But also from this idea ofa transformed hero in the creature that everyone fears (one of the first revelations of Attack on Titan). Or even by the clashes between Kaiju and “simple humans”, well aided by formidable armaments.

Obviously, the tone of Kaiju No.8 it is much lighter (at least in the first episode). A humor that remembers Pacific Rim (2013) by Guillermo del Toro, who popularized the term Kaiju drawing inspiration from numerous Japanese works (including Evangelion). In this film we also got a glimpse of what happens when a monster is defeated, with a black market set up to sell parts of the creatures’ organs. It’s interesting to see Kaiju No.8 in turn imagines a specialized service in this sector.

Finally, we point it out Kaiju No.8 is produced by GI production (Ghost in the shell) and that Studio khara, on which he worked Evangelion: new theatrical edition and the visual pre-development of Shin Godzilla, is involved in this anime. I meet the Crunchyroll to discover the series
