As the hit Netflix series is based on real events in the life of Richard Gadd, the set team was quite moved by a specific scene
Created and starred by Richard Gadd, Baby Reindeer quickly became one of the biggest hits of the Netflix in 2024. With a dense and heavy narrative, the series had an episode that made everyone cry on the set.
It’s worth remembering how the series is an adaptation of a self-titled solo show by Gadd. The narrative is based on real events, which portray his experience of being persecuted and sexually abused during his 20s. Read the synopsis below:
When a struggling comedian treats a vulnerable woman with kindness, he triggers an unhealthy obsession that threatens to destroy both their lives.
In the fourth episode of the production, there are revelations of traumas that Donny (Gadd) has suffered in the past – and how this affects the way he deals with stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning). One such incident shows how he was abused by an older, more successful television writer.
During participation in an event Directors Guild Of America (via The Independent), the creator of Baby Reindeer recalled how difficult it was to film the chapter in question. “We closed the set, but I was looking over and you saw the props guys wiping tears from their eyes as they put the props back the way they should be,” she said.
“The show was based on such a huge trauma that everyone on set at times felt like it was this huge, heavy thing. And that’s why I think everyone had so much respect for everything. I was blessed with this incredible crew who felt that way with me from several ways,” he continued Richard Gadd.
I never wanted to lie. I’ve always needed to constantly check myself to think, ‘Does this feel true to me, to my experience from beginning to end?’ And if it wasn’t, I would have to bring it back.
